My niece and her husband came to visit from out of state, and the husband asked my dad, "Have you lived in Cali all your life?"
My dad looked confused. "Where?"
"Cali"
"No, no, I've never lived anywhere but California."

Dad asked me later how the guy ever got the idea that he had lived in South America. I explained that Cali is a nickname for California and my dad said "No it isn't."

Case closed. Dad has spoken.

OMG: So people in other parts of the country don't have nicknames for places, such as The Apple, etc.

Anybody who has been around California knows Yo is for Yosemite.

And some people who live in San Francisco say never call it "Frisco" but I always did.

But all that is beside the main point. Yosemite is a wonder of the world - whereas Muir Woods is just very nice. Nothing really that special except its one of the closest forests to San Francisco.

I will agree with Tomsd--Yosemite is spectacular. I just thought Yo was funny. Heck, I'll probably start using it myself. I don't live in California, but go there a bit. I was born there. I have never heard it referred to as YO.

I feel Yosemite is a must must see if you have a 2-3 days. I don't feel that it is good as a daytrip,IMOP. If you just have the better part of a day or half a day, then do Muir Woods.

I'm not sure what you can see of Yosemite if going as a day trip.

If you're going for a couple of days I wouldn't bother unless you're either going away from prime visitor season (the start of June to the middle of September) or had inpark lodging.

If Glacier Road is closed due to snow you're going to miss half of what's spectacular.

I find that Yosemite is the most commercial park I've been to. Every service revolves around selling you something.

Ii was at Mariposa Grove when two of the "free" buses were out of service but the paid ride to Glacier Point from the Valley was operating fully. I'm sure people waiting an hour for the shuttle ride were not happy.

If the shuttle system covered more stops maybe that would cause more people to leave their cars parked (start Tnnel View and Bridalveil Falls stops earlier).

Glacier Road to Glacier Point is impossible. Build a parking lot at the start of Glacier Road and charge $1 for a ride to either the Sentinel Dome trailhead or Glacier Point. No use driving a car to the end if all you do is loop back out of the parking lot and back onto Glacier Road that's too narrow to pull off.

Am I negative on Yosemite. No about what the park is. Yes about how it's run.

I would love to go back again but I would have a lot of trouble convincing myself to go.

Myer, I guess I have a whole other view of Yosemite. We love to go and we camp. When we go we don't even take our tow vehicle. We park the RV in the campground and we walk, ride the shuttles or ride our bikes around the valley floor and just love being there. If we buy anything, it's usually some grocery item we forgot from home. It's been years since we've made it to Glacier Point. While it's a magnificently beautiful view, I don't think it's necessary to always make it up there. Maybe I'm just lucky enough to live close enough to get there about once a year (or more) and we always avoid the busy times of the year.

We have done Yosemite as a day trip from the Bay Area. It's not the ideal thing to do because most of your day is spent driving to and from. It's worse in the winter when the days are so short and the sunsets even earlier in the valley.

We were there 3rd weekend of May. Waterfalls were going absolutely full steam. Really wasn't to crowded. But it is a little more comercial than I liked. I can see how it could be big time crowded when it really got going in like July or August.

I wish they would do like zion and restrict vehicles and operate a shuttle like zion. Frankly, Zion was pretty darn crowded when we did it in October. The problem with both of these(compared to other parks) is that 90% of the people concentrate on such a small area. I intend to hike in Tuolmone and the high country on my next trip there. But, nothing like those waterfalls compares to anything I have ever seen.
