MTA Fares & Passes
Hello,
6 of us will be in NYC next month and I'd wondered if someone could provide some info on public transportation. Can I order bus/subway passes ahead of time for the entire week, and are there passes for Seniors? I looked at the MTA web page, but I looked like I had to "Buy a card" to "Buy the Pass" for the senior members of our group. Thank you.

The Senior Citizen Metro Cards have photos on them. Your party can pay $.75 on the bus and when you ride the subway, pay $1.50 for a token and get a ticket for the return trip that is also given to the token booth clerk. The problemthat is the Senior citizen does not get the free transfer between buses and subways without the Metro Card. So you need to weigh one again the other to see which is better for you. Hope this helps!

Hi Duane,
Probably the best thing to do when you get here is to go to the nearest subway and buy a "7 day metrocard" for $17. You will have unlimited rides on the subways and buses. It's very easy to buy the card. You can use cash, debit or credit cards in the vending machines or pay cash and buy it from the token booth. Have fun.

As was indicated the senior citizen Metro card has a photo. Before I got my card this was the procedure. I would show my Medicare card to the token clerk and hand over $1.50. I was given a transfer form to use for my return trip and a token to enter the station. As was pointed out you can not transfer fom bus to train or vice versa without a Metro card. I assume the procedure has not changed. Check this out the first time you use the subway or a bus. When using a bus exact fare in change must be used if you don't have a Metro card.

Actually, the best deal for senior citizens is that with the photo metrocard, every fare is half price, even the $17 weekly! However, since it isn't practical to process info for a photo metrocard in the time you have, it might still come out cheaper for the seniors in the group to pay the 75 cent half fare each time, especially if you know you will still to all busses or all subawys (where the issue of transfers from one to the other doesn't come into play)
BTW, you CAN buy metrocards before you come to NYC, if there's enough time to have it mailed to you. Look at newyork.citysearch.com (somewhere in the right hand column there's a link to info on how to buy the cards in advance, through citysearch, authorized by the MTA )

RQF,
I haven't eaten hot dogs in a few years, but there is still a Gray's Papaya on 37th St (around 7th Ave or 8th Ave) that still advertises 50 cents for a hot dog.
The sign DID say "Recession Special" and "pre-Christmas Special" but there were LOTS of signs still up, so i imagine the price is correct and still in effect.
However, you are STILL the NYC expert in book!
