Mrs Wilkes' Dining Room/Savannah

Any comments, good or bad, about this place? We'll be in Savannah next week, and thought we might give it a try. We'll be driving thru Beaufort,SC on our way to Savannah-any dining (preferably for lunch)suggestions, and possibly a day trip to Hilton Head-what would be receommended there for a nice lunch. Thanks!

The Pirates house in Savannah is full of history and has great food.
We have also eaten at Lady and SOns in Savannah's historic district. Both restaurants are very interesting and have good food.
You will love Savannah, Beaufort, Hilton Head.

Debs: Although our experience at Mrs. Wilkes' was 7 years ago, we still recall it with mouth-watering delight! Just be sure to get there early, as the lines go around the corner. We went for lunch on our last day there and then had to drive 5 hours to get home - were so full we could hardly stay awake. Great place, lovely city.

We were in Savannah and Beaufort in July.
LOVED both places. It is fun to rent bikes in Beaufort. Mrs. Wilkes was better than we imagined. Had both lunch and breakfast there. We drove through Hilton Head enroute to Beaufort and it was a big mistake. Unless you have a specific hotel or restaurant in mind Hilton Head is very difficult to see.
And we read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" during our Savannah stay and it greatly enhanced our visit.Have fun!

We definitely enjoyed Mrs. Wilkes, if for nor other reason than it is do different than anything ou might do back home. And the food was tasty! It's a fun, southern experience. But do get there early and be prepared to stand in line 20-30 minutes. Hated Hilton Head. As another poster mentions, unless you have reservations somewhere (in this totally Disney-esque elitist community) - fergiddaboutit! Even the town that all the guidebookds direct you to...cost s a $5 (2 years ago, maybe more now) entry fee. Not to mention....a 12 - mile long island wtih TWO four lane highways? This is a getaway??? Think about it - how MUCH of truly gorgeous america is availabe for viewing out there..WITHOUT A GATE FEE? My thoughts about HH? A pathetic abomination....

Yes, do Mrs Wilkes, only open for breakfast and lunch. For excellent upscale but expensive dining: Elizabeths on 37th, Pink House, Sapphire Grill. Next tier: Garibaldi's, Lady and Sons, Il Pasticcio. Out of the way BUT out of the ordinary, Crab Shack on the way to Tybee Island. We lived in Savannah and that was our favorite "lets go out to eat" spot--good food, Key West ambience, very casual dress, and a locals spot. I'd see Pirate House for the old building but eat elsewhere, please!

For day trip to Hilton Head, if you want to go to their beach (which we preferred to Tybee's) you have to know exactly where you are headed. There are only a couple of public beaches but both are very nice with excellent facilities. Our favorite was the beach off Folly Field Rd. You'll cross Folly Field (well marked) as you drive down Hilton Head...make a left and follow to the beach. Otherwise, if you are going just to sightsee, the plantations are gated, so no entry. You can go into Sea Pines by paying, and Harbourtown, which is within Sea Pines, is enjoyable for an afternoon.
