Any suggestions on a neighborhood for a single woman in her 30's to move to in Portland? What is a typical rent for a nice 2 bedroom apt. in the city? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

check out NW Portland..older neighborhood, but well maintained.
Yuppie crowd. Funky shops..Id guess around 800 for a two bedroom.

Is there adequate parking in NW Portland? Can I find a unit with assigned parking, or is this unheard of?

I would agree with the suggestion of NW Portland, but must advice that many of the apts. are in old houses and buildings and do not include assigned parking which can be a hassle. There's also a hospital in the area that takes up a lot of the available parking.

NW Portland is awfully crowded from what I remember. I travel up that direction a lot on business and from what I remember, it's quaint, but lots of cars and shopping crowds. The Pearl District seems a little seedy for residential. Isn't there a place called Forrest Grove area?

Jack, the Pearl District has totally changed in the last couple of years and doesn't feel seedy at all anymore. There are tons of great restaurants and shops, as well as really cool-looking residential buildings in converted warehouses, etc. I really like the urban neighborhood vibe there and would definitely look into living there if I were to move from Seattle to Portland.

*Forest Grove area is way out of Portland. You maybe thinking of Washington Park area, which is NW/SW Portland. Many nice places to live in NW,SW (OSUarea) and downtown Portland. If you have a car & need parking, you may want to be slightly out of the downtown area, because most buildings charge almost $200 extra a month to park. Average rent in SW for 2 bedroom is about $750.

While the Pearl District has definitely been cleaned up in recent years, there is still a problem with homeless in the early morning hours after the restaurants and bars have shut for the evening. Also most of the renovated buildings don't offer parking, so think twice before you find yourself living in a downtown area with no assigned parking. Trust me, the area still appears quite seedy at 3 am.

The previous poster probably meant the Forest Heights area of Portland. Very beautiful master-planned community. I'm not sure how many apts. there are in the area, but there are a number of very nice, but pricy condo complexes to choose from if one is considering buying as opposed to renting.

Anyone have a suggestion on a good website for locating real estate in Portland for newcomers to the city? I'm moving there soon as well and need to check the homes as well as apts to see what I can afford once I get there. Thanks

Forest Heights is one of the nicest areas in the city, but can tend to be pricy.

There's a very tall grey building near NW 23rd. I can't think of the name of the apt. complex, but it's supposed to be reasonable and good views. Maybe someone else on here can help with the name and more info.
