Moving To Kansas City, Where should I live?
My husband and I are being relocated to Kansas City (he is being stationed at Ft. Levenworth as a JAG officer) We are both 26, and are from New York City.
I currently work at CNN in financial news and have a business background...We have no children...
Where should we live?
Thanks

There's not a perfect answer but here are my suggestions:
1 Shawnee (KS) since it has great highway access which I'm assuming your hubby will need considering Leavenworth is approximately 45 minutes or so outside Kansas City. Same principle for going to airport and getting downtown.
2. Plaza area (MO) nice neighborhoods are very pricey (maybe not by NY standards?) and your close to the arts, nightlife, etc.
3. N. Kansas City (MO) since it would make your husbands commute much shorter and easier (also it's close to airport and reasonably close to downtown).
4. I live in Overland Park area (ks) and would highly suggest it if you're considering having kids. FYI - The public schools on the KS side are nationally recognized for excellence. Unfortunately the main Missouri school district has lost its National accredidation.

I spent <1 year living in Leavenworth (and no, my old man wasn't doing time! sorry, penal humor is big in a town with 2 huge prisons and a state prison down the road), and relocating there from NYC...well, I don't think you'd be happy in Leavenworth itself. There are a couple of cute towns nearby, but we're talking tiny, tiny towns compared to what you're used to. Heck, KC is small compared to what you're used to! And very suburban in feel, even "downtown". If your husband can handle a longish commute--Leavenworth to the Country Club Plaza in KC is about 45 min.--and won't be working long, irregular hours (and if you won't mind being that far away from the clinic and other amenities on post), locate as close to downtown as you can. You'll very much enjoy how far your real estate dollar will go in KC. Good luck!

Only one choice - somewhere in Johnson County, Kansas. Southern Johnson County (new areas of Leawood and Overland Park) are the most upscale, but unfortunately further away from Leavenworth. You could probably find something in western Shawnee as someone suggested - upscale areas there too.

Near the Plaza for now--then to Olathe or Overland Park area when you have kids. Actually my cousin and husband continued to live near the Country Club Plaza after they had a child and love it. Still think the wide open surburban spaces of Johnson County are better for family life but for DINK's--the Plaza area would be great.
