Readers can provide unlimited amounts of info about Texas or NYC, but what matters most is YOUR tastes, goals, needs, desires, etc.
If you'll provide info about what you prioritize in life, you'll get more meaningful answers.
What do you most like to do with your free time?
How important is culture, and what types?
What about weather likes and dislikes (long, hot, humid summers for instance)?
Employment restrictions?
Have you ever lived anywhere else?
Do you know about stereotypical Texas traits, both cultural and personal...and how do they sit with you?

I presently live in Dallas. Can't stand the big city anymore. Politics has ruined it. From Boerne west is beautiful. I love the hill country. Boerne itself is a pretty little town (used to be little anyway). I haven't been there in 15 years. The only thing wrong with it is it is too close to Austin. I would never live in any state's capital. The political structure affects everything for 75 miles in any direction. We even get a lot of fallout here in Dallas 200 miles to the north. The small country towns of the hill country seem to roll their own merry ways and don't let the self serving politicians bother them too much. If I were you I would visit my friend and check out the area.

I have friends who recently moved back to San Antonio (and they are not originally from there) because they missed it so much. They think it is the greatest. I've never been but it might be worth a look.

I have now lived in the NYC area for two years (am a native of central NY state) and love it. have vistsed dallas on several occasions and know folks who live there, Houston , San Antonio and El Paso. I have also visited friends in Austion and spoken to many people who live there or visit there regularly. I loved it on my short visit and based on the info I have it's the only place in the entire Southwest that I would have a desire to live in. I have heard okay th9ings about San Antonio but if you're used to the cultural attractions, live music options and dining selections of NYC I think Austin would be a great choice. Housing is not cheap there but is in nearly all cases far more reasonable than Manhattan.

Yes, you would love the winters down in San Antonio/Austin. I assume you do realize how HOT it gets in the summer though. I grew up in PA near Philly. It is beautiful in the spring and summer. But winters up north got old for us with commutes. San Antonio is a "big small town." Everybody seems to know everybody in a given field of interest. It is much more friendly than up north. The cultural diversity it a plus. It is also a low-income town with poor educational attainment, but it trying to change that. I don't know Austin well and avoid it because I find it confusing to drive there and the traffic is HORRIBLE. I hear it is neat if you like cultural events and the university town feel.

The only problem with mooving to Texas is that you'll have to live next to Dick Cheney and the big money boys. You know, the fat-cat Republicans who tried to sell out the Social Security Trust Fund and Medicare. They're all from Texas, I'm afraid, and they love to pollute, too.

Querida toodles-
SA is definitely a big small town. It's large enough to offer civilized amenities but doesn't "feel" like a big city in daily life. Housing, compared to East Coast standards, is almost a giveaway. Cheapest options are in fairly new developments on the edges of town, but even in more established areas you can find good homes at a reasonable price (especially compared to East Coast markets). Downtown is loved by toursits and locals alike because it is cool, clean and walkable. There are a couple great and many good restaurants. Arts scene is a mixed bag, with a variety of local theatres and frequent touring companies of popular shows, The SA Museum of Art (including the Rockefeller collection of Pre-Columbina art), McNay art museum, and loads of private galleries. There are five universities (Trinity, St. Mary's, Our Lady of he Lake, UTSA, Incarnate Word) plus a Health Science Center and an extensive junior college system. There is no state income tax, but there are other kinds of taxes based on property ownership (school district, junior college district, county road and bridges, etc.) so that it comes out almost even, maybe a little cheaper.
Public transportation sucks beyond the downtown tourist routes; plan on having a car. Traffic has increased in recent years but is nowhere near the proportions of NYC.
Boerne has been "booming" of late and prices are rising, but again nowhere near East Coast levels. Traffic can be a problem with the influx of people outpacing the infrastructure.
Austin used to be very cool, still gets praised in reviews based on old info, but has been overrun by yuppies with a resultant decrease in quality of life - expensive, pretentious, generally horrible traffic, etc.
Felicidades!
