Gatlinburg -the neon started at the national park boundary- almost as much neon as vegas used to have. in vegas you expect it... dare i say orlando too, you can't get much more touristy.... for a city, how many entertainment parks are there within a 10 mile radius? LOL.

Some places -- ie Las Vegas -- I expect to be touristy; in fact it's part of the appeal. Orlando falls into this category.

Others place - well, when free enterprise engulfs and devours something meant for respectful appreciation, then the touristy aspects just plain fill me with despair.

Probably the most distressing example of this is Royal Gorge, CO. I visited and expected to be awed by a natural wonder. Instead - I felt sullied and dispirited. I can *perhaps* understand the necessity of charging admission to walk the bridge - - but why is an amusement park necessary?

Just a shame.

Vegas and Orlando.

Key West if you got off Duval was not at all touristy. I think a lot of people only see Duval if they are people getting off a cruise ship for half a day.

Who was it said, "It's so crowded that nobody goes there any more"?

My vote: Lost Wages, NV

We did get off the main drag in Key West. But Duval St was just too touristy and I felt that it overwhelmed the whole Key West experience. We recently went to Amelia Island FL and I felt like it was KW without all the crap.

Sedona. What a waste of good scenery on such a crappy town.

1. Branson Missouri.. bad buffets, busloads of people, theaters, cheesy billboards, bad food, etc. Dennis Miller: "Branson is a 'Nashville for Rednecks..'" Blech... love the Ozarks, cannot stand Branson.
2. Chicago--the entire city. Mediocre foods, overpriced hotels, atmosphere of a "poor man's New York City." Especially the Wharf.
3. New Orleans, pre-Katrina. Dirtiest place ever been (because of the drunken tourists). Underneath it all, New Orleans has charm and wonderful local people. Could not pay me $10,000 to visit during Mardi Gras.
4. Kansas City's shopping district along a psuedo-canal. Ugh. KSC = poor man's St. Louis (which is like saying a house cat (STL) is as majestic as a cheetah or lynx (anywhere besides STL)).
5. Seattle's marketplace. Nice place, but very touristy. Neat city, serious homeless issues.. Rock N Roll museum sucked, but neat place. Favorite place: Mt. Rainier (sp).
6. San Francisco. ugh.. they have a serious problem in their streets, from drugs to everything else.. (hard)drugs everywhere. Their mayor(s) = asleep at the wheel. Alcatraz epitomizes tourist-trap (but was fun). Put off by the drugs so openly displayed in parks and street corners (shooting up heroin, smoking crack, etc).
7. Walt Disneyland/World. We were surprised they did not charge for their bathrooms.. wondrous stuff, but very expensive and touristy. Loved FL's Disney. Enchanting beyond words.
8. Paris--great place, but overrun with drugs, insane driving, and tourists. Loved Paris, though. Eiffel Tower particular was a "trap," well worth seeing. Paris is magical, loved it all.
9. Estes Park, CO (downtown area). Shirt shops everywhere. "Buy 3 get 1 free..." Anti-Bush shirts, Pro Bush shirts, cheesy slogan shirts, CO shirts. Favourite: "Got Elk?" (yes, seriously loved that).
10. Oahu. Overpriced, overdeveloped, overrun by developers. I can understand why native Hawaiians are so upset with the US government. (sorry, it's so overdeveloped..).

The Blue Grotto. What a joke. You sit in a boat and go in a circle in a cave. There is a plastic figure of the Virgin Mary which the boat guy is yelling, miracle, miracle. Yeah, and I'll sell you my interest in the Brooklyn Bridge.

Btilke, I've been to New Hope on a summer weekend, and I know what you mean. In this same vein, I thought that Quebec was very touristy - the walled old city anyway. I really liked it, but it is mostly restaurants and shops.

Tsk tsk.. I never said I disliked anything in my list..

I simply listed the most "touristy" places.. I love New Orleans, Paris, Disney world.. You heard what you wanted to hear, said what you though I said?

For the record, I love disney world, but it's touristy.

I cannot believe JCorrea and Norden love Branson.. ah well, different strokes for different folks (I know, I am reading into their statements like they did mine.. they LOVVVVVVVVVVE Branson!)

If Norden can tell me where he stays when he visits Branson, because he loves it so much, can he please let us all know? Thanks.

I forgot to add another touristy place/destination.. Riviera Maya and Cancun. Once a paradise, now resorts for miles upon miles. The Mannequin Piss in Brussels is also touristy.. both the male and female versions. I think Italy and other places have their own Mannequin Piss(es). I am not kidding.

Let me know where you guys stay when you visit Branson, per your posts, 10-20 times a year(?!).
