Most Romantic Dinner in NYC

Will be in NYC 12/25-12/30 and want to celebrate 1st wedding anniversary with a fabulous dinner. Looking for a restaurant with great romantic atmosphere, excellent food and wine and some place unique to NYC. No tourist traps! We have heard suggestions for Oceana, One if by Land..., Windows of the World, etc. Any info and opinions would be appreciated!

I'd recommend One if By Land - in addition to an incredibly romantic atmosphere the food is excellent. Happy Anniversary!

Consider La Grenouille. While expensive as you know what, it is the greatest meal I have had in the U.S. Truly classic haute French cuisine in a magnificent old dining room filled with literally tens of thousands of dollars worth of flowers. The professional, seasoned staff has been catering to wealthy New Yorkers for years. Each table has at least 3 waiters, including a captain. It was fun to see how incredibly responsive they were. A mere glance in their direction brought someone to the table right away. Count on a $300 bill for two.

Le Bernardin or L'Espinasse -- both very expensive, both sublimely wonderful. Le Bernardin perhaps slightly more reliably wonderful.

My husband and I became engaged at Sonia Rose, a lovely French restaurant in Murray Hill/Gramercy Park. (We are actually returning there in August to celebrate our 2 year anniversary.) The food was absolutely wonderful and the service attentive, without being obtrusive. Maybe there are 15 tables in the entire place. It is less than 10 blocks from Gramercy Park, a small square located on Lexington and 21st Street. Although you need a key to actually enter the park, it might make for a nice walk before or after dinner.
I would also recommend another small little French restaurant in the West Village. Chez Michallet is located on a beautiful tree-lined street. It's absoluetly tiny, but the food is delicious. And the West Village is a great area to walk around. Not as expensive as some of the big name restaurants.
One if By Land is also very nice... a little too "in your face" romantic , but nevertheless, makes for a lovely evening.
You can email me if you have any questions or want more suggestions.
