Mosquitos in Naples

Hi there

I am hoping to got to Naples, Florida in early May. I have heard there is a lot of mosquitos around at this time. Is this true or just rumours?

Also can someone tell me why all the pools are covered with screened lanai's. Are there alot of bugs??

Many thanks

I don't have a screen on mine. They lower the water temperature 5 degrees. They are a good way to keep leaves out of your pool, that is their main purpose.

Bugs are definitely a part of Florida. You will get mosquitoes when water puddles so you will get more mosquitoes during rainy times or in the days after it rains. Honestly, I can't recall that May is a problem and for some people (not me) mosquitoes are no problem because the pests don't like the way they taste. Maybe you will be so lucky.

We visit Sanibel every May (just north of Naples) and the mosquitos are not a problem. The "no-seeums" are terrible though. They are in shady areas and come out around sunset. They are so small that a screen won't do any good. All that said, we love it there - we just don't go outside much and close the windows & doors after dark.

jeez, I'm having a hard time figuring out what the advantage is of being in Sanibel if you don't go outside.

These little pests can be deterred by some bug spray. Cutter makes a pleasant smelling one with an active ingredient (promtherines or some such spelling) that is made from chrysantheums (or some such spellings). Spray on your ankles and you will be in better shape to survive them.

Sorry Tandoori Girl - should have said we don't spend a lot of time outside AFTER DARK.

Anoone - I wouldn't hesitate to go to Naples (or Sanibel)in May. You'll have a great time!

The screens around the pools also keep the alligators out!

Last year, with all the rains, winds, hurricanes, etc. my husband and I were enjoying our pool when we saw the teeny tiniest of little green snakes zipping towards us. Guess it had either fallen into the pool or been blown in. It seemed as curious about us as we were about it. We just left it in the pool and it never showed up again. I kind of miss it and am always looking for it to return.
