MORE ADVICES ABOUT CLOTHING FOR NYC TRIP!!!

Ok, I know you want to kill me because I'm such a pain, but I really need to know exactly not only what should I wear, but what I shouldn't wear too!...Where I live, girls wear very contemporary and modern clothing, such as 3/4 tight skirts, colorful shirts, etc., (just like the girls from FRIENDS), is this out of place for my on November's trip to NYC?

As Annie said - in NYC people wear absolutely everything. I don't think there is a place wear more modern - often bizarre - clothing is worn. Whatever you are comfortable in will work...

From my observations -- if you're wearing black and a leather jacket, you'll fit right in.

It might be chilly out, so if you're wearing a skirt, bring warm tights and a warm jacket to keep you warm.

As for the colors, style, etc.. you'll see everything from purple hair to wigs in NYC, so nothing really matters. New Yorkers are known to mind their business and let you be you.

That's the great thing about NY.

I just got back from a trip to NYC. One of the things that jumped out at me was the drabness of the streets of New York. Not the buildings, the people. The previous poster was right. EVERYONE wears black. Literally. You can tell the people from out of town because they are NOT wearing black. If you want to fit in, wear as much black as possible - even the children. If you want to stand out, wear bright, cheerful colors.

(Don't get me wrong, I had a wonderful time there. But that's another line of comments altogether.)

Black is best in NYC. I remember it is NYC you really don't have to pack a thing the stores are great, just go shopping. One tv show not to copy (although I love it) is the girls on Sex in The City. They look great but I seldom see people dressed like Sarah Jessica Parker walking the streets. Their evening clothes yes! I agree lighten up and have fun.

Irma, I think you posted previously that you are young and a fashion model? I'm sure you can get away with wearing whatever colors please you as long as you look pulled together. From what I see on MTV color is certainly in style. But you don't have to be chic or trendy to have fun in NYC...it really depends on your own comfort level and where you're going to be. But because you seem concerned about it (and I don't blame you at your age), most people in NYC wear a lot of black because it's easy (don't have to spend a lot of time/money pulling together a look), black is appropriate for all age levels, and it doesn't show the dirt. NYC can be very sooty and dirty. NYC people have always worn black, at least since the 50's the art scene, I guess, so historically black is the color of choice in NYC - it represents artiness, sophistication, rebel attitude (in leather), avant-garde intelligentsia and also has street credibility. Also the winter is gray and the black just goes with the gray and gritty landscape.

Yes, all the outfits are black in New York, but they didn't start that way. It's because of all the FILTH you pick up if you lean against a wall, sit on a public bench, etc.

Not as bad as London with its centuries-old history of coal dust lurking behind every rooftop, but watch out what (and who) you may rub up against. Yeah, plan on wearing something vomit-proof!

(And I do love NYC, by the way!)
