The best time to visit the American Royal BBQ contest is Friday night. Every team has a party - many even have bands! I have had better BBQ (particularly the ribs!) from some of the teams at the Royal than from any of the over 100 BBQ restaurants I have visited.

I like KC BBQ a lot, but also like Memphis and the Carolinas. The only one I don't like is Texas BBQ. The mesquite adds a flavor that I find unpleasant.

Allen & Son Barbeque, Chapel Hill, N.C. is one of my favorites. But there are many terrific BBQ (pork) places in N.C. It's hard to choose just one! And, yes, vinegar-base rocks!!!

I'm glad to see that some of you know good barbecue when you eat it. If you want very fine roast beef, go ahead and eat Texas "barbecue" or Kansas City "barbecue", but if you want the real thing--the essence of Barbeque--then you need to try the pork ribs and pulled pork shoulder from north Mississippi, west Alabama, and Memphis, Tennessee. Several great places have already been mentioned in this forum: Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is very good, but I wouldn't drive more than two or three hours out of my way to go there. Abe's in Clarksdale is some of the best you'll find in Mississippi. Memphis, because it's the nearest city, is the capital of barbecue, and the best places there are Corky's for "wet" ribs or Rendezvous for "dry" ribs. No one from the area disputes my claims about barbecue, and I hope no one else will mislead this foreigner.

repete, I have the same problem with Maurice Bessinger.

Every time I want to eat there, I remind myself of what he stands for. Then I think about the fact if I boycott his restaurant, his employees suffer more than he does.

He's made his millions but he does provide many jobs for people. Who knows?
