midwest getaway in august

Husband and I have 3-4 days in mid-August to get away with no kids. Looking for somewhere fun within 4 -6 hours of Michigan. We like plays and concerts but also like nature activities. Or just sitting on a great beach. Ideas??

Michigan is a huge state. Where will you be starting from? Seriously, from the northwest upper peninsula, you could barely make it to southeast lower peninsula in that time (or vice versa), so it will hopefully help you get relevant answers to provide this one thing.

We live in mid-Michigan. We can be to the Mackinaw Bridge in 3 hours, Chicago in 5 or 6, Toronto in 5 or 6, just to give you an idea. We could drive further than 6 hours if worth it - or we could tour over the couse of this mini trip. We can take off sometime later on Wednesday after dropping one kid off at Blue Lake Camp near Muskegon and we need to be back to Detroit Metro on Sunday to pick up another child returning from an overseas trip.

My suggestion would be Chicago. From Blue Lake Camp it should be easy to arrive Wednesday evening. That gives you three days to explore.

What time on Sunday for the pick-up at Metro? Early Sunday traffic out of Chicago should not be bad.

There are some great plays in Chicago this summer. I've been checking them out for a possible visit myself from mid-Michigan.

Might be a little farther than you are looking for, but how about Door County Wisconsin? Great place for art, culture, beaches, quaint shops, good food, great inns, scenic walks and general sight seeing.
