How about Macinaw Island (not sure of the spelling)which is just about in the middle of Michigan and a perfect place for vacation. You take a ferry over and there are NO cars allowed on the island, just horse drawn carriges.

Perfect for a getaway for two.

Have a great time.

Hi Cathy! I like the Petoskey and Harbor Springs areas. There are nice restaurants, b&b's, skiing, and golf. Harbor Springs is a quaint town with lots of nice shops.

The Pictured Rocks Nat. Lakeshore is beautiful. On the West side is Munising, and east is Grand Marais. A dirt road connects both. Saw a kayaker in LS that was from Grand Marais. PRNL is beautiful.

I know there are cabins in or near the beautiful Tahquamenon Falls (in UP but not on shore).

The forest service rents fire lookouts in some states (ID, MT, ME, e.g., ). Not sure about Michigan. But, other posters here sang the praises about staying in a (an old) firelookout for a week. This site is from a western forest, but you may be able to find links to some MI forests. [If you do find how to rent in the UP, please post!]

Mackinaw Island is not in Lake Superior

Isle Royale, another National Park, is another, more adventurous choice.

Isle Royale is much closer to the Minnesota side of Lake Superior from Grand Portage, MN but you an go there from Houghton too, however it is a much longer boat trip. It is pretty rustic unless you like to camp.
