I failed to mention, we crossed Mississippi on a barge! OK, Modoc ferry, it was cool I hope my picture will turn out all right. When developed (on a CD) I'll post them on WorldIsRound and provide the link.

No plans to go to St. Louis but had to read b/c Faina wrote this.
As usual, I enjoyed being transported to a different local by living vicariously thru you. Your report has valuable details and is highly entertaining.
Hope Cali's black eye has faded to light yellow by now.
Thanks

I knew it!! I knew Faina gave CaliNurse the black eye!! Faina gets a little nuts when she doesn't have a good cup of coffee in the morning. I hope CaliNurse got even and gave Faina a tattoo while Faina was sleeping.

P_M, I got even with Faina by driving 80 mph on the freeways, AND on the cobblestone streets in St Charles- - and with only one available eye to see.
Faina was great with navigating on the little roads in towns, and at reminding of the speed limits--a human and funnier version of those voiceover car navigator systems. E.g., She saved me from driving down a bumpy road to an industrial loading dock on the edge of the Mississippi, when we should have been at the ferry barge area.
Traveler24, the lobby at the Hyatt is AMAZING (and it's available on Priceline for less than $100/night). Wish we could have stayed there, instead of the "Dreary" Inn across the street. I walked over alone one day (without tripping and getting another black eye). Considerng this was a program about Arts and Architecture, and one of our guides was passionate about the city's restoration/revitalization efforts, I'm surprised it wasn't on the Elderhostel program.
Bear 900, I had the same question about "playing hooky" from class. But it was nearly all interesting. In retrospect, i could have skipped some of the VERY contemporary gallery. "Hostel takeover"--lol.
Eileen, if you're reading this from St Louis--have a great trip! The Art Museum has TWO gift shops--you want the BIG one downstairs, not the little one in the lobby. We drove through Delmar--wish we could have got out and walked around there, and by some of those amazing mansions nr Forest Park.
Powell Symphony Hall is spectacularly beautiful, and the sounds of the quartet were stunning.
I'd consider a trip back there, hoping the coming year's weather will cooperate and Mother Nature will put on a beautiful autumn show. There were areas of the city we didnt get to see, and towns in the countryside of MO (eg Defiance, Daniel Boone's home and Cape Girardeau) and IL we didnt see, and places like Ste Genevieve and Ste Charles, and Fort de Chartres (in IL) which I enjoyed and would have liked more time in. Alas, the 4 days after the EH program ended went quickly.
I'll try to write a TR, as some of our "takes" on places were different. For starters--I ate Faina's blackberry cobbler. Yummy!!

What fun. You make me see this town with new eyes. I wish I could have run into your group out and about.
Nadoz is unfortunately not within easy walking distance of Metrolink. Closest stop is Central West End, maybe a mile away. My early morning coffee group meets there sometimes. There is a bus that will take you right there from that Metro stop.

Hope you got postcard from Ko Olina too, sent in September.
Hope you are doing well, and look forward to see you, Faina, and other local Fodies, in March.

Bravo, Faina, for another outstanding report! Your little getaways are always so entertaining.
I would be interested in knowing how some of the glass art is used in the restroom.
We've got roadkill down here in Texas, too. Lots of armadillo. Poor fellas just don't have a chance with all the trucks. It's always sad when I see Bambi, tho, lying there.
I'll stay posted for the pictures!

Some pictures from the trip to St Louis are here, all of them taken by my traveling buddy CaliNurse (she asked not to post her real name on the Internet). As she has that fancy computer camera, she was fast to upload them!

For some weird reason, 2 pictures could not been saved rotated properly. I tried and tried and tried, but…

Hi Faina, thanks for posting these great pics. It looks like you and CaliNurse had a great time. Let me guess--CaliNurse put a bug in your ice cream, so you kicked her a$$ and gave her that black eye? You did look miffed in that picture.
;-)
Having grown up in Oklahoma the Trail of Tears does bring back memories. What a sad time in our country's history.

LOL P_M why are you so good at guessing
As for the Trail of Tears, what shocked me the most is the peacefulness of the park now vs. those horrific days in the past.
Now, Kal posted a note on WorldIsRound advising CaliNurse to seek better company (sniff sniff) LOL

Earlier I posted pictures taken by CaliNurse (with her permission of course!).
Now, if somebody wants to see mine, just a few, I don't take much
