Depends on the kind of vacation you want. South Beach is very high energy, very late night, very clubby. My favorite spot in the keys - Key West - is laid back and has a wide variety of funky restaurants and tourist activities. In the keys, you'll do fine with shorts and sweat shirts. In South Beach, you'll need something black! My preference would be a night or two in South Beach and the rest of the time in Key West.

Nancy - I heartily recommend your going all the way down to Key West, which is about a 4 hour drive from Miami. There are LOTS of great places to stay, but you definitely need to be in Old Town, which will put you within walking distance of all the restaurants and tourist activities. We normally stay at the Galleon, but it's very difficult to book and harder still if you want to stay less than a week. We've stayed at the Hyatt several times and at the Ocean Key House once...both were great, but expensive. You might check out this web site...keywestparadise.com and look under accommodations. In my opinion, the closer you are to Front Street (the Gulf) the better you'll like it.

check some of the other messages related to the Keys and you'll get some good ideas. South Beach isn't really for relaxing, it's a party town and a "tourist" one. It's expensive, wild and fun if you want a place to let loose and not worry about who's watching. The Keys can be fun, relaxing or boring, depending on where you stay, what you do, how much you can spend and which Key you stay at. If it's your first time then definitely drive down to Key West - if you are divers or big fishing folks than take an extra day for the upper Keys - there's very little to do from shore or the island. To do the water stuff that the Keys are great for you have to go out on a boat. Do you snorkel or scuba dive? Water ski, fish, or want to hang out at a beach?
