maui - waiting for midnight plane home

Just wondering what others do after check-out at 11a and then waiting to take late plane home. Travelling with 2 teenage daughters and husband and have rented private condo that we must check out of on June 1st at 11am. We weren't able to extend the stay by 1 day, the place was already rented. Thought of renting a room somewhere for a few hours so we can take a shower and relax, but many places require multiple day stays. Would one be able to use hotel facilities for the day if going for a spa package? Suggestions appreciated. We will be staying at the Mahana.

We've done little tours (fairly near the airport in Kahului), like Iao Needle, watch the windsurfers (Baldwin park?), see the historic part of Wailuku (and the heiaus), War Memorial, etc., things that don't involve getting in the ocean! Then everyone is wound down and can sleep on the plane. Teens? You could even wind it all up with a visit to Queen Kaahumanu (sp?) mall, about a mile from the airport.

I was successful several years ago to get a one day room at Renaissance in Wailea. We were staying at Kea Lani and they were booked so we couldn't extend. The Renaissance gave us a room for $100.00, discounted since we were really only there for 8 hrs. or so. I'd call around and check to see what you can find.

Last year in Kauai, we just treated the day like any other. We snorkeled in a few places and when we were done, we showered at one of the beaches. We used soap and shampoo we had from the hotel.

It was no big deal to us and it worked out just fine.

Ohanaman, That's an excellent idea. Our flight out of Maui leaves at 5 pm and generally what we do is to treat it like any other day...except swim. Its a good day to take a drive, visit the winery, etc.

We are in the same boat about waitng for plane to leave Maui, but our plane doesn't leave till 11:00 pm. Where do you put luggage? Would hate to have it stolen while we are snorkeling or shopping etc,....

Personally, I would get another room. BUT, make sure that you have early check in, not 3 PM. Dump my stuff, enjoy the day, shower and change for dinner, eat, and pick up my luggage. For me, it would just make the last day of my trip feel like I was still on vacation, not in transit to the airport. Just a mindset I guess.

You could spend the day in Lahaina, shopping, having lunch, looking at the galleries, there's a self-guided historical tour you can get a map for, have dinner at Aloha Mixed Plate (is that name right, the local place right next to where the Old Lahaina Luau is?). That would make for a fun day without getting salt-y & sand-y!

It might be worth a try to ask your hotel to let you have a late check out for a small charge.

Paia is within 20 minutes of the Airport a fun town to walk around. Hookipa Beach is close by. So is the Maui Mall in Kahului. The Iao Needle would be nice. There's the Maui Seaside Inn near the airport that you probably could get a reasonable room for your afternoon/ evening.

We're in the same situation - we check out of Lahaina B&B at 11 am and our flight back to LA is at 11pm.
We'll have the rental car all day and we're thinking of doing a day trip to Hana and then back to the airport. Does that seem like a good or a crazy idea???
I REALLY wanted to change our flights (on Continental) and stay an extra night in Hana but that'll cost $100 per ticket - does anyone know a way to get around the fee? Suddenly 6 days in Maui doesn't seem enough!

We are thinking about doing the same thing. Doing the Hana drive. Just curious if anyone knows how early you can check your luggage in at the airport. We thought about checking luggage in before we left the the Hana drive, and they way we won't worry about theft. Any suggestions. Hate to spend extra money just for luggage to sit there. Plus where we are staying is not near the airport. We are staying on the west side of Maui. lol
Mahalo to all with any suggestions.

If you are staying at a hotel or resort, simply have them keep your luggage after you check out of your room.

(I realize this may or may not help those staying in condos or B&B's).

My daughter and her DH were on Maui in Feb. They stayed at the Four Seasons. Their plane home left at 11:30pm. When they checked out, the hotel let them leave their luggage there. They had a nice shopping day and dinner then went back to the hotel and picked up the luggage when it was time to go to the airport.

I read a good tip about what to do with luggage in rental car on the last day of trip {when you have a late flight}.

Leave it in the trunk, out of sight. But take a cable bike lock and run it through the handles of the suitcases and then attach it to one of the hooks in the trunk.
