I did not stay at the Marriott when I was on Maui last summer. However, I did walk through the hotel and it looked very nice. No sign of contruction anywhere.
One couple I ran into who stayed there commented that their staff was rather pushy trying to sell Marriott's timeshare stuff. It is their job to try and make money for the company, but it could make for an annoying stay.

Lisa, Do you have a reason to stay at the Marriott? I know some folks have Marriott points to use, so they stay there. Personally, it is the last hotel along that strip that I would stay at, all things being equal. The Hyatt, Westin, & Sheraton are all much nicer.

Checked out the Marriott just this past spring. They have just completed a completion renovation - the rooms look great and the pool area is as nice as any in Kaanapali. I would stay there over the Westin or Hyatt. We stayed at the Hyatt two years ago and were not impressed.

I stayed there about a year ago - got a great deal and enjoyed staying there very much. The pool area is wonderful and the rooms are just fine. I had an ocean-view room. It was a large, typical Marriott room.
I liked the location (close to Whaler's Village, restaurants, etc.), the beach area. What I didn't like: parking fees (which most of the hotels in that area have), no coffee maker in the room, restaurants at the Marriott. However, those dislikes would not dissuade me from staying there again if the rates were great.
