My husband and I will be taking our 2 teenage daughters to Maui in June and I had a few questions. I was reading the posts and read that your hotel will provide a picnic lunch to take to Hana. We are staying at the Kea Lani and was wondering how far in advance you need to reserve that and how much it costs? I also read that there was a shuttle in to Lahaina. We will be staying at the Hyatt the second part of our trip and will be going to the luau and Warren and Annabelles. Does a shuttle leave from the Hyatt and if so, how often does it run? It would be nice not to have to fight the traffic and search for a parking space.

I can't speak for the Kea Lani, but I ordered a picnic lunch a few weeks ago from the Marriott Wailea. I would imagine that their offering/arrangements are similar to the other big hotels. There were several different options for picnic lunches on the room service menu. We had to order by 9pm the night before, and we picked it up at 6am before leaving for Hana. It was $16 per person, plus taxes and gratuities. You could probably call or email the Kea Lani to make sure. I also know the Kea Lani has a little cafe/restaurant called Cafe Ciao Deli that has a variety of take-out foods; according to the website, they do picnic baskets as well.

I've stayed there in the past, by the way, and we loved it.

Well I know I could create a truly great picnic for $16/head LOL

I used the shuttle to Lahaina on a recent trip to Maui and found it to be quite good. I picked up the shuttle at the Shops at Wailea. The trip takes just about an hour.

Thanks for the posts. In response to Gale, we will be staying at the Hyatt in Kannapalli and was wondering if there was a shuttle from there, not Wailea.

There is a shuttle right outside the Hyatt that goes to Lahaina, whalers village, the cannery and the rest of Kaanapali. It runs on a regular circuit..you won't have to wait long. Hotel has schedule. It is 5 or 6 minutes to Lahaina from the Hyatt.

Check out Pic-nics in Paia. They have fantastic picnic lunches and a heck of a lot cheaper than one at your resort.

The supermarket in Kihei has a good selection of ready made food also--can't remember the chain name, but the bbq meatballs, chicken, etc. made a good pic-nic and they have styrofoam chests with ice for the drinks--all reasonably priced.

I stayed at the Kea Lani last year and inquired about a picnic lunch for Hana, but thought it was way overpriced. Instead, we stopped at Safeway in Kehei on the way and got a Styrofoam cooler, sodas, made to order subs, chips and cookies for a fraction of the cost.

Picnics is no longer in business. I emailed them about a week or so ago regarding our trip to Maui this June. They replied that the business had been sold and was now under the name of "Cafe Mambo" or something like that. They didn't say if the new place still sold packaged lunches.

Picnics is no longer because they weren't all that great to begin with. Try the Hana Bay Juice Company in Pa`ia. They also have the funnest "Road to Hana" cd, featuring Jed "Captain Aloha" (who you can find on any given night parking cars at Mama's) and local radio personality "Uncle" Boy Kanae.
