Well, Larry, with close to 200,000 FF miles we should be going to Hawaii or Europe this year BUT......... with being so particular about who watches over our elderly doggie, and still finding the solution to that, we are still DRIVING!!! My DH wants to go to St. Petersburg, Fl and surrounds to see just how hot it FEELS there in the summer so we will be doing that in July or August; we are going to the Carolina coast in August for several days, then to New England around Labor Day. Don't know after that. I think we may have found a potential live-in sitter ........ still haven't met her. The things we do for our little creatures, huh?

So what's happening with you? Did you stay at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott on your last trip to B.I.? If so, did you enjoy it as much as before? I SO want to get back there.........

Shop at local grocery stores.At least you'll be reminded that you are in Maui by the different kinds of produce, meats you'll encounter.I've shopped at the Costco once in many trips to Maui. I remember the realization "My God I'm not in Maui anymore, I'm in Costco!".

LOL, logandog, I had sorta the opposite reaction when I entered the (a?) Costco in Oahu with my cousin who lives there, saw macadamia stuff in front, and figured this couldn't really be Costco cuz it felt so Hawaiian.

Hi Bonnie. Yes we stayed last summer at the BI Marriott and boy oh boy we really did enjoy that. Overall it was our 2nd best vacation. Fiji is #1 however. Yes, I can imagine how you felt when the Heels won the whole thing. We had some pretty good b-ball memories here thanks to some NC guy named Jordan. . Good game overall but too much Sean May for the Illini. Anyway hats off to them for a terrific yr.
We went to India for 3 weeks last Jan.-Feb. to see my wife's in-laws. We enjoyed seeing them but were never so happy to be back in the USA in our lives. We all got sick. I lost 10 lbs. due to "Delhi belly" and my wife fainted at work on her 2nd day back. Outside of that it was fine.
Our next trip is an Alaska cruise in August followed by 3 days in Seattle. Can't wait. I'll bet NE in the fall will be fantastic for scenery. As for the heat in Fla. then I do believe it will be intense! We spent 1 week in Marco island in July one yr. and let me tell ya that place was H O T !! We rented a convertible but couldn't use it. There are a couple Costco’s in the area, albeit a little far for a weekly shopping run. I will swing by one to check out the prices and the selections.

I like the idea of shopping locally, I am heading there for the location and the people – and you can meet more folks at the local shops.

But – feeding this lot for the week can be expensive, especially when they want to be fed well. For the adults that means great cuts of meat and fish, and the kids all of the snacks and pop they want [a no-no at home…].

So we will see what I learn at my field trip to the local Costco. Hey – the kids need swim suits and if I can find those Speedo’s it would make this a done deal!

In Maui, we found the Costco seemed more "Hawaiian" than the big, impersonal supermarket that we found in Kihei. Costco Maui did have some things we don't have at Costco in San Diego. I am trying to remember...it seems that their seafood section definitely had more variety than we have back home here in San Diego. There were macadamia nuts, chocolate covered macadamias, and some other items reminding us that we were in Hawaii.

We didn't go looking for farmer's markets but a farmer's market anywhere is always an interesting experience.

We saw plenty of "locals" shopping in Costco! (They are the ones who know exactly where everything is!)

Vacation in Hawaii spent slaving in the kitchen cooking three meals a day for demanding guests and kids and shopping at Costco. You left the mainland for this?

Melissa5 got it right..you will see way more locals in Costco than Foodland. There's a reason Costcos in Hawaii are so successful and it isn't the tourist business!

The lines are a lot shorter than in mainland stores. Probably because they don't bag your groceries here.

Your meat savings (and the better quality) will make membership worth it.

Melissa, they have all the macadamia nut stuff in San Diego too.

I think if you're really going to cook for 7 people every day, a Costco membership could save you money.

My first reaction to your question was no, but after further reading about what you wanted to cook and for how many people, I think it will be worth it.

The meats are where you'll save the most. The seafood selection is ok, but still not a bad deal. You'll definitely save on the sodas/drinks.

Considering you have 7 people and you're staying for 2 weeks, many of the bulk quantities that Costco sells the food products at shouldn't be a problem. Obviously you wouldn't buy the huge container of salt/pepper or ketchup - but the majority of items sold could easily be consumed by your family in 2 weeks.

They're only staying for one week...Sunday to Sunday.

A couple of years ago I had a Costco membership. At the time I had to pay for everything by cash or by check. BJ's allows credit card use (and often has 3-month free trial memberships)

Do you have to pay by cash or check only at the Hawaiian Costcos? And will they accept and out-of-state check?

How much are you out if it's not "worth it"? You've written that you're looking for "great cuts of meat and fish" so budget doesn't seem to be that big an issue. I'd guess you'd save the membership fee and more in meat, snacks and pop alone, but I find it kind of amusing that you're asking this over $45, considering it's a week and seven people.

nccgirl, I use an American Express Card in the Durham store........ They now have a combo membership/credit card together. But I remember when I DID have to use cash or a check.

You can use a check card (ATM Card) at the Costcos in So Cal. I'm not a big fan, there are a few things that are definitely priced better (cheese comes to mind) but then I don't have a family of 7 so maybe I don't appreciate the huge sizes.
