I spent my honeymoon at the Hyatt last October. The weather that time of year is great. Try to get upgraded when you get there. We were able to get free breakfast at Swan Court each morning of our stay. The buffet is really nice but not worth $35-40 for breakfast. There are some nice restaurants on Front St. in Lahaina. Cheeseburgers in Paradise is just that. Go right before the sun sets and get a table upstairs. It's beautiful and not that expensive. We also ate at the Bay Club in Kapalua - around $125 and romantic. Also, walk to Whaler's Village along the beach path. There are upper end shops (Louis Vuitton, Fendi, etc.) and restaurants. No matter where you go, you'll have a great time because it's so beautiful.

I have stayed at Renaisance Wailea Beach Resort (was called Stouffer Wailea Beach Resort until recently) twice. It was absolutely wonderful each time! My last trip was a couple of years ago, and it was even more wonderful than the first; the rooms had been remodeled and everything was beautiful!
I agree that you should check out Lahaina for some fun; we also enjoyed the sunset view at the casual,Cheeseburger in Paradise! At the Renaisance Wailea, you must dine at the Cabanna by the pool, called the Maui Onion; absolutely THE BEST onion rings on the ever!!!(who would think onion rings would be worth remembering, but boy are they ever!) I highly recommend the Renaisance Wailea. Check out www.renaissancehotels.com/HNMRN/ to get a look for yourself!

The hotels you asked about (in the FIRST post above) are all on Kaanapali Beach, which in my opinion is definitely the best place to stay on Maui. One of those you named (Whalers) is a condo, not a hotel like the others (Westin, Hyatt, Sheraton, Marriott). I like the Hyatt the best, but the very newest is the Sheraton, which was completely rebuilt just two years ago.
Other people above mentioned the Prince, the Renaissance, and the Four Seasons, but all of those are in Wailea, which to me is not as beautiful and does not have as much to do as the Kaanapali side of Maui.
Lots more info about Maui sights, activites, restaurants, etc, is at this web page:

The drive to Hana is about 2 1/2 hours going at a leisurely pace. Remember that Hana is not the highlight of the trip. There really isn't much there but the drive is gorgeous. Also 20 mintues past Hana is the "Seven Sacred Pools" (actually part of haleakala National Park). Really nice pools to swim in. Also check out the black sand beach at Wainapanapa right before Hana.

Maui Prince is more secluded and I beleive on a really nice beach. There are a lot of gorgeous beaches in the area. Hyatt is really nice- especially the pool. It is on kaanapali Beach which is really nice and has good snorkeling at Black Rock. Also it is closer to the night life/shopping of Lahaina (5 minute drive).

Aloha! If you're staying on the Lahina side of the island, you'll find yourself bombarded with restaurants. There are a lot of cheap places that don't include McDonalds or KFC! A few recommendations- Aloha Mixed Plate, Hard Rock Cafe, BJ's Pizzaria to name a few.

Hi. Well not too many people are going to love me, because although we went to Kanapaali for dinner I much preferred Wailea. Yes it is more arrid, but it is not something that bothers you especially since you are looking towards the ocean most of the time. I research hotels extensively, and just planned a trip for someone dear, this is what I found out. The Embassy is very nice and I do love this chain but found the area to be quite unattractive and isolated. The Hyatt is supposed to be beautiful but some rooms have been a disappointment for the price you pay. The rate given to me yesterday was the aloha rate at 225.00 a night. The Westin also has great public spaces but not spectaculor rooms. The Renissance at Wailea I have heard great things about and you can get the entertainment rate a t 50% which takes a room down to 160.00 a night. We loved the Kea Lani and I would recommend it. Don't overlook the Four Seasons at Wailea as its ratings are of the best for the whole island. For October, stay 4 nights get the 5th night free, averaging to 236.00 a night. Remember here it includes parking, tennis, health club, cabanas at the pool, 1 hour free snorkelling gear daily-most other hotels have charges for this. Don't stay the Prince unless you like the very basic, sparse Japanese atmosphere. Feel free to contact me for more info. Annemarie
