Maui--12 hours between hotel checkout & plane departure?

We have a 7 day vacation in Maui and need help with our final day on the island. We are to check out of our hotel, Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, on Saturday morning. Our flight home doesn't depart until 11:30pm that night. Does anyone have suggestions of what we should do during that time? I don't know if beach things are ideal since we won't have access to showers. Thanks for your help!

Check with the hotel, they often have "day" rooms or other facilities that enable you to shower and change.

This has happened to us a few times. Part of the day you can hang around the pool reading books, relaxing while they hold your luggage in the office. Part of the day you can spend eating a long leisurely lunch at an oceanside restaurant to take in the last, soon-to-be-missed flavor of the islands. Later in the day you can see some of the sights on the "airport side" of the island that you haven't seen yet. Then have a long leisurely dinner at Mama's Fish House. Afterwards, go for a hike along the beach. Then get to the airport early with some great books to read.
Also, there is always the possibility of squeezing in a movie.

Oh, one more thing I forgot: We have usually been successful in begging and pleading the front desk staff to let us have a late checkout time---sometimes they'l give you as long as 2pm. Or sometimes for an extra fee, they let you stay even later.

Personally, I would pay for the extra day and keep my room until I'm ready to leave. Well worth the expense to have a full, relaxed day before the long flight home.

We used that "extra" day to visit Haleakalā after lunch, then spent time in Paia. You could finish with dinner at Manana Garage Restaurant in Kahului.

Haleakala is a good idea. Manana Garage, I heard, no longer exists and is a different restaurant now. Does anyone know if that's true?

That car makes it easier (place to deal with the luggage). I think Haleakala is a great idea, if you haven't visited earlier in your vacation.
