Maui - Aston Mahana

3 more days to Maui - can't wait. While looking over the boards at the last minute, I noticed several posts about construction/renovation at the Aston Mahana in September. Is that still going on? Is the pool still closed? This could be a big drag on our dream vacation. We will be there from 10/10-10/21. Please - anyone who is familiar with this condo, let me know what is going on. Thanks.

Is there a reason you don't call the hotel and ask them?

Do follow that advice and call the hotel before you go. We spent a week at the Mahana in September and we were miserable with all of the construction that was going on at the time. We listened to tile saws, hammering and even a jack hammer in the inside elevator area all week long. Our complaints went unnoticed and after contacting Aston directly when I returned to the States, their response was that they were sending letters to their guests advising them of the construction and offering them a reduced rate or a move to a different Aston property. The construction will be going on through December of this year. And yes it was a real drag on our dream vacation to listen to all of that racket.

>>...when I returned to the States,...

Hawaii is one of the states.

Maybe this belongs on the geography thread

Perhaps we could stay with the inital question of the constuction issue at the Mahana instead of criticizing the wording of a post?

Maui is a wonderful place to visit, but at this point in time, the Mahana is not the place to stay at until the renovation is completed unless you want to listen to a lot of noise while the constuction is going on.

Oh No! I am planning to stay at the Mahana in early November. I rented from an owner, so I don't think I can cancel and get my money back. What are the hours that they are doing the construction? Will it help that we are staying on the outer end of the building, thus the furthest away from the lobby?

It may help with the noise level to be on the outer end of the building, but it really all depends on what phase of the remodel the hotel is in when you are visiting.

The setup of the property is that the lobby is in the center of both buildings, pool in the middle and 2 elevators for each building to the left and right of the lobby. You can't get in and out of the building or go to the pool without going through the construction areas.

We had to move from our first condo because of an owner owned remodel directly underneath us, but that still didn't help with the noise and inconvenience of the Aston hotel remodeling.

I never got a start time for the remodeling, but I did find out that the contractors are allowed to be there until 6PM Mon-Fri.

Has anybody else had any experiences at the Mahana in the past month? I am booked there next week and I just came by this post. I called the hotel and they said the work is only in the lobby. I wanted to know if you can hear it in your room, on your lanai, or on the beach or pool areas. Thanks.

My husband and I were guests at the Mahana from 10/27 to 11/6. The owner of the condo we stayed in (who is on the board of the owners dealing with the construction) said all the remodeling will be complete by the end of this month. When we were there, they were finished tiling the lobby area and were shingling the lobby roof. It could get somewhat noisy around the pool at times, but nothing that made me think of complaining or wishing I was staying somewhere else. We usually lounged out on the lawn by the beach anyway because of the view and the great breeze where I didn't notice the noise at all because of the beautiful sounds of the ocean! They were still doing some work on the elevators which was a bit of an inconvenience. Only one of the two elevators for each building was operating at a time, so it could be somewhat of a wait trying to get up to or down from your room (longer wait during the day while staff are cleaning rooms). No big deal. We couldn't hear anything on our lanai or in our room for that matter. That's one of the many things I love about the Mahana - we have never heard any of our neighbors...we've only smelled the person below us enjoying a cigar on his lanai in the evening. #39;) We have been to Maui several times and this was our second stay at the Mahana (we rent direct from owner who has beautiful, clean, updated, fully stocked units) - and we'll never stay anywhere else. I don't think you can beat the view and the closeness to the ocean. Try not to worry about the construction. You will have a wonderful time!!!

I just checked the building layout on their website and we are in room 412, which is right next to an elevator, the pool and the lobby, all of which various posts have indicated is where noise has indicated. In the opinion of these posters, or others who have stayed, how do you think these end rooms closest to the rooms will be affected. I will be there next week, and when I called the hotel they said the work will not have yet been completed. Thanks.

Sorry to annoy anyone, but here today gone2Maui is absolutely right. When I lived in Hawaii, there was no greater insult than to refer to "the States" as if Hawaii wasn't one. Refer to these 48 connected states as the "mainland." I believe this is something any tourist would want to know before going there.

Hawaii is one of the 50? Since when?

Just having some fun with ya Heidi. No offense....

But it is funny when I hear people still calling the mainland, "the states."

FYI, some residents on the islands NOT Oahu get a bit irritated at Oahu residents when we refer to them as the "outer islands." "NEIGHBOR islands" is the more proper term.

School is now OUT.
