Martha's Vineyard

I am about to travel from Germany ( where I work for the Army) to Martha's Vineyard to take a course given by Harvard. This is a last minute opportunity and I am scrambling to find an inexpensive accomodattion ( for 1) that stays within the govt per diem for that ara ( 190 - inc. meals) Any thoughts/suggstions? The course is given in Edgartown in the harbor View Inn which is way too expensive for me. As I will not have a car, I would like to stay as close to the course location as possible. I am also thinking of trying priceline.com.

PL is probably a good bet for you. Have you contacted the Harvard department that's offering the course, for suggestions?

My experience with Harvard educational courses tells me that 1) the reserved rooms fill up quickly and are released back to the hotel within a few weeks of the course dates, and 2) the arranged rates are not a great bargain most of the time. Usually the course coordinators have an arrangement with the site hotel for rooms, and I have often found better rates on my own.

As for Edgartown, it's an easy town to walk around in, it's small, and has many B&B's and small inns. Unfortunately this is peak season, so availability and rates won't work in Anne's favor. I'd call the Harborview Hotel (1-800-ISLANDS) and speak with either their concierge or manager, and tell that person you're attending a course at the hotel, and ask for suggestions of nearby accommodations in your budget range. Someone there will likely have an idea what is available in the vicinity, and they may even offer to make the reservation for you.
