MB is about 6/7 miles from LAX I'd say, I lived in So.CA for years but am now located in Phoenix. Off hand I cannot think of any motels in MB itself, (not to say there aren't any). There is a Best Western Sunrise in Redondo Beach (the towns are Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo). The Sunrise faces the Marina area,it's about 8 miles from LAX. There are also a number of motels, including the Best Western Redondo Beach along PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). These three towns sort of stretch down from PCH to the ocean. You most definately could get to LAX for an early flight but unless you have a rental car you had best make sure these motels have a shuttle service. Since you are only there for one night you might want to consider another alternative which is the Furama Hotel just north of LAX. We've stayed there enroute to Europe several times, including this past spring. It's a large place (700 rooms) but has the advantage of being next to a residential neighborhood instead of right smack in the middle of LAX, which makes it nice if you like to take a walk. There is a park across the street as well and 2 grocery stores right close by (for those last minute items!). They also have shuttle service to LAX (about 4 miles I'd say). There is also a Embassy Suites-South just off El Segundo Blvd. to the south of LAX, it's a very nice hotel as well (we have stayed there too) and they include breakfast in the rate. I'd avoid the Hacienda Hotel tho (also just south of LAX), their service was nothing to get excited about. There are lots of hotels on Century Blvd. as you go into the airport, but we liked the Furama because it is a little away from the airport itself, but close enough to get there in a couple of minutes.

Hi, Joan,
There are several hotels or motels in MB, including a nice Marriott. Most are located on Pacific Coast Hwy, called Sepulveda Blvd. locally - Sepulveda is around a mile from the beach, and the attractive bits of MB are closer to the water than Sepulveda and the office/industrial parks to the east. I don't know if any of the hotels offer airport shuttle service but would rather doubt it.
I did find one web listing for the Manhattan Beach Hotel (http://www.californiabeachhotel.com/) on Highland near the beach, but know nothing of it.
For an 0800 flight you should be on the road by 6:30, earlier if you're returning a rental car, even given that MB is only a few miles south of LAX (depends on where in MB, too.) The area is very busy in the mornings, lots of offices and factories with early shifts.
I guess if it were me I'd enjoy MB in the evening, return any rental car that night, spend the night in a LAX hotel with shuttle service, and get a couple of extra winks.
While you're in MB, don't forget to have a look at Mira Costa High School, home of the mighty Mustangs, on Artesia near Sepulveda. Go Green and Gold, we used to say in my days there, back when the McDonald's on the corner served 19c burgers and 25c cheeseburgers, and I invented the flyburger (don't ask.)
