We went to Bar Harbor last year with our Newfoundland and found it to be dog friendly. We took him hiking and shopping in town. We ate at a restaurant outside on their patio and they allowed us to have a table by the edge where our dog was with us but out of everyone's way. We were camping so that makes it a bit easier but we didn't have any problems at all.

We take our dogs to Maine every summer. Most outdoor places are welcoming. In Portland, we've eaten out a lot in the Old Port section. They are giant dogs so I usually try to give them some exhausting activity beforehand. My best advice is to just ask if dogs are okay.
We also stay in hotels along the way. We've done this in Portland, Bar Harbor and Massachussetts. I don't leave them alone in the room because they may bark. It can be limiting, but it's enjoyable too.
In a pinch, check Bringfido.com for pet sitting places. Most Petsmarts also have a doggie day care service. You just need to make sure your dogs have their bordatella shots within the past 6 months.

Sorry but I cannot recommend the River
side motel for if you cannot cancel don't panic as it is clean, however it is a freeway off-ramp type place on a row of motel 6 ....think truckstop and you get the idea of the neighborhood. I don't think it's what you're looking for after 3 nights in Bar Harbor! Very high-traffic area with trucks whizzing by on the freeway.
Try Freeport instead, you will enjoy it much more and the restaurant choices you've made are for the most part much more convenient to Freeport. Freeport is just 15-20 minutes north of Portland. The Best Western would be the best pet-friendly choice in Freeport (unless you want to go high-end at the Harrasseeket Inn). The Econo Lodge and the Super 8 are also acceptable and doggy-delighted, I think.
