Maine, need help with best area to stay

I'm finally ready to start seriously looking at booking a rental house for our trip in October after scanning what's available for about a month now. I know I gotta get on this quick but I had to wait for confirmations from our other two friends. Two of us couples even have our flights booked Yeah!

So my questions is...as I'm looking at the Bar Harbor/Acadia area...does it really matter which area I find a house? Would anywhere in the Mt. Desert Island, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor, or Southwest Harbor do us just as well as Bar Harbor itself? Our idea is to find a nice water front home to rent, but not sure if that will leave us too remote, and if we'd be happier in town somewhere? I know this is subjective of course, but I have no clue what to expect. We'll only be there 3 nights, and plan to cook a couple nights, so location and what it has to offer in regards to the view of our surrounding is pretty important. I love the idea of sitting on a large deck overlooking the water and boats at the end of the day (or early morning), but then perhaps I can do that at a restaurant just as easily if we are in town? And maybe that is more ideal to take in the atmosphere of the area? Help?

Yes, anywhere on MDI would be fine, and not remote from BH or anything else.

seal harbor is easiest (of the 3) drive into bar harbor. southwest takes the longest. i'd surely try to find something with water view.
while you're there take a drive over to schoodic point or they may be running a ferry from bar harbor.

Thanks, I tried to find something suitable near Seal Harbor but we ended up with a place in Southwest Harbor on the water. We'll be there 3 days so we'll just have to deal with the 30 minute drive into Bar Harbor.

it is not a good idea.(no offense to anyone) but my mother does not like cold weather, she was in a car accident years ago and since then whenever it rains or snows or the weather is cold at all, she gets great pain in her lower back and hips and sometimes can't even get out of bed. she also has four kids to take care of, one of them just got out of rehab, and im afraid that since there isn't much out there to keep him out of trouble, he will find trouble with ease. my mom's financial situation, well, lets hust say that she can hardly make it now, last time i talked to her (a couple days ago) she wasn't able to buy coffee. which, considering the economy today isn't a surprise because she does have a family to provide for, but she says that there are a lot of jobs up there and that the housing is affordable, she also mentioned that the schools in maine will pay the children to attend school.

jeterray,

I assume you know that Acadia National Park covers a good bit of MDI, so yes, there are hiking/biking(carriage roads) all over the island, no matter wher you stay.

Southwest Harbor is a nice little village, with some nice restaurants and a nice bakery. There is also a nice museum there, I can't remember the name, wonderful wood carvings...I think you'll enjoy it, even though it's a bit of a drive. I'm pretty sure you could get a sailboat cruise from there, too. All of MDI is wonderful, you'll have a lovely time.
