M1 UWS to Battery Park
I plan to ride the M1 from the USW to Battery Park to catch the ferry to Ellis Island. I would like to know where to get a Metro Card, where to catch the bus (we are staying 79th + Amsterdam) and about how long it will take to get from point A to point B. I tried to find information on line - and I'm sure it's out there - but have not yet. Thank you in advance for your help.

Just to let you know, the M1 will take FOREVER to get from the UWS to Battery Park. Taking the train would be your best and fastest option, and this is where you can buy the MetroCard.
Your route would be to take the 1 train (red line) from 79th and Broadway down to South Ferry, the last stop. This should probably take you about a half hour tops, compared to what could be an hour on the M1 bus.
A good website to check on tourist sites and how to get to them, is the NYC MTA transit site. The website is www.mta.info Hope this helps!!!

You would have to take the crosstown bus on 79th and Amsterdam to 5th Avenue where you transfer to the M1. it will take at least one hour and possibly longer for the trip. If you decide on the subway take the #1 train DOWNTOWN at the 79th St. station to the last stop, South Ferry. Trip will take less than 1/2 an hour,

Have a look at the bus map here
http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/index.html
As others have said, the M1 travels down Fifth Ave. (the east side) and you're on the west side. So you'd take the crosstown bus just west of Amsterdam on 79 st.heading east (notice the bus turns north on Amsterdam to head through the park on 81 st but comes out of the park on the east side at 79 st.) Get out of the 79 bus and transfer to the 1 on Fifth Ave. Make sure you get a 1 that's going all the way to State St. Some of the 1's evidently only go as far as 8th st. in the village as I read the map.
You can buy a metrocard at some newstands and delis or at any subway station. (You have to go down into the subway but don't have to ride the subway if you don't want to.). If you're only planning to do this trip, you could pay in coins (a bus ride is $2). If you do this, make sure to get a transfer when you get on the bus (ask the driver after you've put your coins in the till-no pennies).
How long the trip would take depends on time of day and day of week. On a weekend I'd gues about an hour. On a weekday, maybe up to 2 hrs. But you would get some good views.
hopstop.com is a website that would allow you to pick alternate ways to get from point A to point B. They also now also have approximate taxi fares (in Manhattan). For a bus route, hop stop suggests taking the bus down 2nd ave. (the M15L). That does appear to be a shorter ride but wouldn't be as interesting imo. You also could take a bus down 7th ave/Broadway. The #20 appears to start at around 66 st. in front of Lincoln Center and heads all the way down to Battery Place.
I read something interesting yesterday. If you're not planning to go to Liberty Island at all to see the SOL close up, you could take a NY water taxi over to Liberty State park in NJ. ($5/person) and take the ferry from there to Ellis Island. You save some time not stopping at SOL first. Someone took a tour of Ellis Island with a guide who used this "trick." I thought it was a good idea.

Wait a minute. I'm piecing together your various threads. If you're thinking of doing this on Sunday morning before a 2 pm matinee it's not possible. Also, you mentioned taking the Circle line cruise. I hope you're not confusing things here. The Circle Line Cruise leaves from midtown (around 44 st). The Circle Line happens to run the FERRY that goes to SOL and Ellis Island. You absolutely positively do NOT have time to go to either SOL and/or Ellis Island on Sunday and make a 2 pm matinee, esp. if traveling by bus.
If you want to take a boat ride before the matinee, I think we already said do the Circle Line and bring some food with you so you don't have to eat between boat and show. That's the only boat trip that doesn't require going all the way downtown. Oh, the teen might enjoy riding "the beast" but not your 70 yr old parents.
