Love, LOST, and Limping - Hawaii 2014

I'm back, the laundry is done, and it's time to start my trip report.

I just finished putting together a photo album - hopefully the link will work. It's the quick version of the report: https://picasaweb.google.com/1072554...Kyj4easp5qOqwE

More to follow!

All right, then, let's go!

We had not planned a visit to Hawaii anytime in the near future, especially since we have a big trip to Wales in May with Mr. Pickle's a capella men's choir.

However, when my brother-in-law, who lives on Maui, called to announce his engagement and to invite us to the wedding, we thought we should go.

We used Southwest Airlines points for the first and last legs of our flights, and got a pretty decent deal on Hawaiian Airlines for the rest.

Tuesday, March 11th

Our flight from ABQ to PHX left at 6:00 a.m. This was right after the switch to Daylight Savings Time, and we were a little loopy that first day. We both lost our water bottles going through security at PHX because we forgot to empty them. Arizona doesn't observe DST and thought we had to hurry more than we did to get to our gate. Instead, we had over an hour to wait for our flight.

We had a pretty good flight - the crew was friendly and we had a decent amount of leg room, though the seats weren't super comfortable. Hawaiian serves a continental breakfast - fruit, cheese, crackers - which was tasty.

None of their audio channels worked except the one for the TV screens mounted throughout the cabin. Even though I'd just seen it at the dollar theater, I didn't mind watching Thor: The Dark World again. We both managed to doze a bit during the flight.

We got to Honolulu around noon, stopped so Mr. Pickle could change into shorts (it was around 34 degrees when we left the house, and he couldn't bring himself to wear them), picked up our rental car, and headed to Pearl Harbor.

We rented from www.discounthawaiicarrental.com, thanks to recommendations from several Fodorites, and got a very good rate. We weren't all that impressed with our car, a Ford Focus, but it was fairly comfortable and did the job.

Our USS Arizona Memorial tour was scheduled for 2:30; we'd reserved the time several months ago. Visitors need to pick up their tickets at least one hour ahead of the tour time.

After getting our tickets, it was time to start enjoying some Hawaiian food! MelissaHI gave me several recommendations for places to eat in the area, and we chose Wally Ho's Garage and Grill. http://www.wallyhosgarageandgrill.com Our food budget is generally pretty low when we travel, and this was right in our financial ballpark. It's about five minutes from the Arizona Memorial visitor center.

I had the Okinawan shoyu pork plate with one scoop of brown rice and the tossed salad, and Mr. Pickle had teriyaki beef with the macaroni salad. It was delicious - tender, flavorful meat with perfectly cooked rice and a tasty sesame/ginger dressing on the salad. Mr. Pickle's macaroni salad was really good as well.

We drove back to the visitor center; visitors are required to check purses and backpacks, so keep that in mind when you go there.

There is a lot to see and do at the visitor center - a couple of museums as well as tours of the USS Missouri and USS Bowfin submarine. We didn't have time or money to do either of those, unfortunately.

Visitors to the USS Arizona gather to watch a short movie about the attack before getting on a boat to travel across the harbor. I'm sorry to say my lack of sleep was catching up with me by this point in the day, and I dozed through most of the film.

The memorial itself is very moving. We'd wanted to see it for years, and we were impressed by the simple beauty of the building and the respect everyone there showed.

After the tour, we visited the museum next to the theater and walked around the visitor center until it was almost closing time. This, of course, dumped us into rush hour traffic. We were both pretty tired, but managed to get to our hotel a little before 6:00.

Suze had suggested the Waikiki Sand Villa, and it was just right for us. It's on Ala Wai Blvd., and the route off the freeway down Kapahulu Ave. enabled us to locate Leonard's Bakery, Rainbow Drive-In, and a Safeway.

We paid $100 a night for our room; guests get valet parking for half price. They gave us a free upgrade to an 8th-floor corner room, too. We had a lovely view of the canal, golf course, and the mountains, and we were up high enough to not be bothered by any street noise. Thanks, Suze! http://sandvillahotel.com/

We set the alarm for 7:30 p.m. and took a short nap before venturing out for the evening.

Another fantastic Suze suggestion was eating at Me's BBQ on Uluniu, a couple of blocks from the hotel. It's part of the Royal Grove Hotel, and has a small patio where you can eat. The menu is mostly Korean food, which I love.

With your entree, you get a couple of scoops of rice and four small sides of your choice. Mr. Pickle had meat jun, and I tried Sunny's special, which was a combination of kalbi beef, bbq chicken, man doo, and meat jun. For sides, we had broccoli, kimchi, a marinated fresh cabbage salad, and a couple of other things. Everything was so good, and we had leftovers for the next day.

We walked down to Waikiki Beach, just to say we'd been there, and stopped at an ABC store to buy a T-shirt for my dad. By 10:00, we could barely keep our eyes open and called it a night.

Good advice re: staying over by the Ali Wai Canal. It used to be a bit more iffy there - but has cleaned up and has good value.

And I never tire of a view of the lush/green mountains in Hawaii, plus being up 8 floors does take you away from the traffic/street noise.

Also like to watch the locals paddling up the canal.

Lord willing, Songdoc, you'll get to see me on another game show in the future! ;-)

On with the show...

Wednesday, March 12 The LOST Tour

I'm a huge LOST fan. One of my priorities for this trip was getting to visit some of the show's filming sites, since they shot almost everything on Oahu. Mr. Pickle isn't particularly a fan of the show, but this gave us a good excuse to rent a car and see more of the island, so he was happy to come along.

There are dozens of sites to see, and companies who will cheerfully accept your $$$ to take you on an all-day tour. Since we're cheap, I used http://www.lostvirtualtour.com/ and http://gohawaii.about.com/od/oahuact..._locations.htm to half a dozen or so.

After a stop at Safeway to pick up breakfast, coffee (thank goodness for a Starbucks in the store!) and snacks, we made a quick stop at Leonard's Bakery to try their malasadas. They're fresh, hot, and wonderful. We tried the li hing and lilikoi malasadas.

Sacred Hearts Academy is about 10 minutes from Leonard's. Their church served as the Dharma Lamp Post station and is the church used in the finale, when everyone figures out why they're in the sideways world. Since it's a private school, I figured we wouldn't be able to go inside the church, and I would have to be content with a photo of the Jesus statue in the parking lot, which you see in a few episodes.

As I was taking pictures, a Russian man pulled up in a school van. He asked if we were LOST fans. I said yes, and he offered to unlock the church for us for a small donation. Whoo hooo!! We were able to sit in the pews, visit the organ loft, and take a lot of pictures there. I'm sorry I didn't get the man's name, but I am thankful he let us in.

We got on the H-1, heading for the Pali Hwy. Kapena Falls, another filming site, is located near the Royal Mausoleum. Since we'd already decided not to visit Waimea Valley and its waterfall, we thought we'd give this one a shot.

Unfortunately, though we found a trail and hiked through the trees and scrub, we never did see the waterfall. We could hear it, but couldn't figure out how to get there.

After we got back home, I realized I had written down the wrong directions. If we had parked at Honolulu Memorial Park, we would have found it with no problem.

However, the Royal Mausoleum was pretty interesting; it's the burial spot of several members of the Kamehameha dynasty. I wish I had known more about it before we stopped there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Mausoleum_of_Hawaii

Highway 61 is one way to get to the windward side of Oahu and the North Shore from Honolulu. We enjoyed the lush greenery as we drove.

Our next stop was the Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside. http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/oahu/nuuanu.cfm You get a pretty spectacular view of Kailua and the ocean from here - and yes, the wind is pretty strong!

Kualoa Ranch was probably the most touristy thing we did on this trip, but it was fun. If you sign up for a tour online at least a week before you plan to visit, you get a 10% discount. We didn't decide to go there until a couple of days before we left, but we figured we wouldn't have a problem scheduling something once we got to the location. http://www.kualoa.com/

Kualoa is a working cattle ranch and a filming site for many TV shows and movies, including Hawaii Five-O, Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, etc. We signed up for the one-hour bus tour; their ATV tour sounds like fun and takes you to more sites, but it was a little out of our budget.

Cowboy, our driver/tour guide, was fun and informative. Besides the film sites, he told us about the ranch's history and some of the native trees and plants we saw.

Later that evening, we were watching a repeat episode of Hawaii Five-O, and there were the thatched homes we'd seen that morning on the tour.

After the tour, we started thinking about lunch, and the famous North Shore shrimp trucks. MelissaHI suggested we try Romy's, Hono's, or Giovanni's; we never found Hono's and didn't realize Romy's was a little further up the road, but our lunch at Giovanni's was quite tasty. A half plate (six shrimp and a scoop of rice) was plenty for each of us. I tried their famous garlic shrimp and Mr. Pickle had the lemon butter. Good stuff!

We drove past Turtle Bay Resort; I briefly considered a stop there, since both LOST and the newest Hunger Games movie filmed there, but decided against it, since our next LOST stop would take some time and effort to reach.

On the way to Papa'iloa Beach, we stopped at Ted's Bakery www.tedsbakery.com, recommended by both LOST Virtual Tours and MelissaHI, to pick up some dessert to go. I had to try their chocolate haupia pie, and Mr. Pickle got the blueberry cheese pie. We thoroughly enjoyed these that evening!

Papa'iloa Beach served as the main beach site for LOST; they used a different site in the first season, but it was too close to the highway for most people. To get there, look carefully for Papa'iloa Road, and drive about 800 feet to the dirt parking lot across from the only public access path to the beach. Turn left and walk about 1000 feet to the filming site.

The 1000 feet takes close to 15 minutes to walk - either you slog through deep sand or walk on the lava, which involves some rock hopping. It's a great workout!

I brought my plastic polar bear and a black wool mitten I'd made for Mr. Pickle for some cheesy show reenactment pictures, and we had fun staging and shooting the photos. I was briefly tempted to do something goofy with Frogurt's "we can't even get fire!" death scene, but thought better of it.

Next up was Haleiwa and a stop at Matsumoto Shave Ice. After the trek across the beach, this was a welcome treat! Mr. Pickle had the Matsumoto special over ice cream, and I combined coconut, li hing, and lilikoi over ice cream. I really enjoyed it; Mr. Pickle said he wouldn't go out of his way for another one, but thought it was good. What a heathen.

From Haleiwa, it's a short drive to Mokule'ia Beach, where LOST's pilot and the season 1 beach scenes were shot. http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Mokule'ia_Beach As I said earlier, it's close to the highway, and it must have been inconvenient for the locals when traffic was stopped for filming.

We didn't find the exact spot they used, but we enjoyed watching the kiteboarders offshore.

Our final stop was YMCA Camp Erdman, aka Dharmaville and the home of the Others. I forgot until after we were headed back to Honolulu that we should have stopped at the office to ask permission to walk around, but no one was at the cabins so it wasn't a problem.

We made our way back to Honolulu, with a stop at the Ala Moana Center to pick up some cookies at Big Island Candies. http://www.bigislandcandies.com/BIC/ My brother-in-law sends us a box every Christmas, so we picked up a box for Mr. Pickle's a capella choir. While we were there, we visited their extensive food court for dinner (poke bowl and Thai, both yummy), then crashed at the hotel with our pie.

This day was so much fun!

Loving the trip report, and the pictures from the LOST sets! My husband and I did the ATV tour of Kualoa and it was a lot of fun (but tiring). I have yet to visit Papa'iloa Beach but it's on my to-do list. I'm dying over the pics with the polar bear and mitten. It makes me want to watch the series again!

Wow you covered a lot of ground. Sounds like a fun tour even though I'm not a LOST fan, I do watch Hawaii Five-O. I love the shrimp trucks, make a drive up there most visits. Been to Giovanni's a few times and some others but don't remember which ones.

tifa2276, I read your ATV tour report - that did sound like fun!

Papa'iloa is a really nice beach, and there were very few people there the afternoon we visited. One family was having professional photography done, and another couple was there, but that was it. I imagine weekends are busier.

My picture props had to fit in my carryon, so I was a bit limited. I'm glad people appreciate my silly photos!

Ackislander, I always get so much help from Fodorites when I plan a trip that it seems like the right thing to thank them.

More soon, y'all.

It was fun to read your report, and entertaining!
It is also comforting, a little, when people state (as did you) that they don't do some activities, for "budget" reasons. I used to think we were almost the only ones to think that way, but not so. Then we have a few extra bucks to splurge on something that we really want to do (that often involves a nice golf course).
Thanks for sharing.
