Grandma was raised on a dairy farm in upstate NY, I'm looking for a place to take my family of 5 to experience the farm like she did.

Any recommdations? I just want my kids to be able to gather the eggs, milk the cow, see the daily grind of real work. Not looking for a upscale resort type of trip, more of the 'dude ranch' concept with a farm.

I'm sorry, I guess I goofed. Those responses got me to thinking that I should narrow the search in the specific states of Penn or NY.

I didn't mean to clutter the board. Sorry for the double post then.

I got excited and thought that people just reading Penn or NY posts would see.

When I read, I search for specific states, I don't read posts in the general column. *Sorry*

Kristin, actually that's not a bad idea, but you'll have to repost again with "Upstate NY" in the title of your post. Unfortunately, even if you put something under "New York", that's just for searching, the actual post goes into the general US forum. Sorry if I came off harshly - didn't mean to.

You might check out Weatherbury Farm which is south of Pittsburgh. The website is www.weatherburyfarm.com. They are a farmstay B&B; I haven't stayed there myself but they are members of our state association.

I know it sounds crazy, but i used to know people in the toy industry that found it cheaper to go to the toy fair in Nuremburg than the one in NYC

I'm pretty sure there are some Lancaster County PA farms that accept families as guests. Suggest you contact www.padutchcountry.com and they can direct you to them.

Yes, Lancaster County is the place to go. There are several B&B type establisments on working farms that cater to families. You can help feed animals, participate in milking, gather eggs, etc. And these places have very reasonable prices. Also, there are lots of additional family friendly things to do in Lancaster County. Go to the site recommended by ckwald and you should find what you're looking for. Good luck.

If you decide on Weatherbury Farm in Avella, PA, there is very interesting archaeological site nearby called the Meadowcroft Rockshelter. This is possibly the oldest known site of human habitation in North America dating at least 12,000 years back, possibly 19,000. There is also a museum of rural life in the 19th century, which is pretty interesting. Both the rockshelter and the museum are closed until Spring 2008 for renovations. If you are in the area after it reopens, do not miss it.
