Looking for a fun city

My husband and I like to trave with another couple to places with lots to do. So far we have done Boston, New Orleans, Montreal, New York, Washington DC, Quebec and Philadelphia. Any suggestions for fun places for 4-6 days in North America?

Looks like you've not been to anywhere except the Northeast, plus New Orleans. How about LA and Vegas? San Franciso? The Northwest (Portland/Seattle/Vancouver/Victoria)? Florida (Orlando/Miami/The Keys)? Rockie Mountains?

Tonnes of "fun" places to go, depending on what you're looking for.

Would you be interested in a smaller city such as Asheville or Charleston?

Vancouver, Playa del Carmen, Acapulco, Cabo.

Can you narrow this down a bit? North America is a bit ambiguous.

Sorry to be so ambiguous. We have been to FL with family. Tampa/St. Pete and Orlando. We are looking for something that has 5 days worth of a mixed itinerary (i.e. history, clubs, scenery). We are planning for next year. We like warm rather than cold but would visit say Chicago in the summer. I guess what I am asking is where would you go for an adult vacation in the US, Canada, or Mexico?

Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, if you want to be in cities.

A drive from Calgary to Vancouver if you are willing to spend a couple of days on the road.

Okay, well if you would be interested in a smaller city -- though bear in mind I don't know if you would be -- I stand by my recommendation of Asheville, NC as a consideration. Why? Because you say you want varied attraction in an "adult" (read: sophisticated) setting, and you're interested in such things as scenery, nightlife, and historic sites.

Take a look at this link for a list of things to see in Asheville that I posted a while back:

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=34467920

Meanwhile, for nightlife, ask yourself if you like live music, because that's this town's greatest strength. For a list of area nightclubs (not counting the casino at Cherokee), see the listings available in the "Club Land" section of the Mountain X-Press, the local independent weekly. Their website is:

Definitely San Francisco! Here are some of the things we saw and did there:
1. took in a Giants game
2. crossed the Golden Gate bridge, and went up into the wine country (winery tours available)
3. took a hot air balloon ride over the wine country
4. took a ferry ride to Alcatraz and tour of same
5. sight-seeing in Haight-Ashbury area
6. sight-seeing at Fisherman's Wharf
7. Museum of Modern Art
8. rode the cable cars
9. rode down Lombard Street ("the crookedest street in the world")
10. walking tour of Chinatown
11. and there was so much more we didn't have time to do ...

Let us know what city you choose!

San Diego -- I think it has it all!
Ocean, weather, history, culture, food, entertainment. We just got back from a 5 night stay -- we're not "clubbers" -- but Gaslamp District looked promising for that. To be honest I was very surprised at what a well-rounded destination SD is!

Shaz, where are you flying from? The reason I ask is if you are on the east coast, say Boston, Cabo would be a big haul. Out of your entire five days, two whole days would be spent traveling. Not fun, throw in jetlag, and everyone's cranky.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We are flying from Boston. I don't know much about Mexico but thought maybe something on the Gulf Coast would be doable. I sometimes think that the research and dreaming about where to go is almost as good as the trip. Maybe that is why I have the privilege(?) planning these trips.

Another vote for San Franciso -- beautiful, historic, sophisticated, romantic, wild, cultured, liberal, fun!

If you went to San Diego, you could also easily fit in a side overnight trip down to Ensenada, which is loads of fun.

Both Playa del Carmen and Cozumel are great trips. Isla Mujeres is great. Anyplace on the caribbean except Cancun unless you want big resorts.

I'm envious!

I think you've picked great cities so far (except Philly being just okay to me).

For adult city vacation:

I'd go for San Francisco (can be cool and cloudy even in summer but comfortable for touristing). Tons to do but a sidetrip to Hearst Castle or Redwoods if you want to get out of the city a bit.

adult city w/ resort area:

Miami if you like your weather hotter. ; ) Day trip to the Keys, and a visit to Vizcaya. Latin atmosphere is fun. Nowhere near the city in terms of range of things to do, places to go as SF is however.

adult resort and historic ruins, without city:

Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Chichen Itza, Coba ruins all great and hot and lovely and beautiful beaches to boot. Fun too but no city to speak of.

Chicago is a solidly good city, shopping, hotels, restaurants, neighborhoods, Pier area. Great if you are into architecture.

Las Vegas is a good place to gamble.

If you are interested in the entertainment industry at all, Los Angeles can be a lot of fun if you plan ahead for events. Many people will malign it I'm sure but I've had a lot of fun there!

Vancouver and Seattle are nice but wouldn't put them near the top of my list unless you put them together.

Good planning so far!
