Alaska Airlines this week unveiled a unique paint-job on one of their jets. It is pretty cool - a 737 painted as a giant salmon. Have a look:

Fine and well, making a little art in a fanciful and imaginative way. But guess who paid for it?
You and I did, the taxpayers -- to the tune of a half a million dollars. How, you say?
Pork. By means of the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board.

How do you feel about this expenditure?

Don't get me started on these "pork" projects. The multi million dollar overpass in a city with no traffic because -- the head of the committee lives there; the dozens of silly projects that cost us billions, yet we can't possibly afford to provide health care for the needy and dozens of other projects.

I'm so mad about this!! Oh sure, this marketing message reaches travelers to Alaska, and it makes an indelible impression all right. But, really: Does the sight of a salmon plane make you want to go to Alaska and fish? Does it make a person going to Alaska want to fish? Does it make a person fishing for something else want to fish for salmon?
I can see it now:
"And how did you hear about our tour-fishing company?"
"I was deplaning in Des Plaines and I saw the salmon plane from Alaska Airlines. I Googled it and found your company and booked a $2,300 expedition with your receptionist!"
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!

And I hate to bring this up, but if the "Alaska bridge to nowhere" is the Ketchikan one which will link the airport to the city (which now can only be reached by boat) as well as enable the island where the airport is to be further developed, I'm not so sure it's much different that most federal road construction projects. Sometimes you need the bridge first to allow development. And how many airports do you know that you can't get to the town it services except by boat?
