Long Island Wineries

I am trying to plan a weekend trip for my wife's birthday (Sept. 15). I'd like to visit some wineries and go to a nice dinner. Will the traffic be awful during this weekend? What are some wineries/restaurants I should check out? Are there nice, but reasonable hotels or B&B's that anyone recommends? Thanks!

I gather that every weekend is now crowded there, but that weekend will be crowded b/c of the preceding Jewish New Year holiday which will make it a 4 day weekend for many.

I love the Jedediah Hawkins House in Jamesport which has a wonderful restaurant and also lovely rooms to stay but it's pricey for both. The Frisky Oyster in Greenport is a very good restaurant, again not cheap. The Harborfront Inn in Greenport gets good reviews

Here's a thread from last year with some good info.

Did you read the recent NYTimes article about the LI wineries and the trouble they've been having with some visitors? Pretty shocking behavior. So now some of them are no longer allowing week-end visits or they require reservations,

I worked at the Chaddsford winery in PA for a while and we never had to deal with that kind of appalling behavior. Hope it's still like that.

mclaurie has mentioned the 2 resterants i'd like to go to most in the world! (along with the american hotel in sag harbor) ;-) on the north fork is my favorite vineyard, lenz. they have wonderful champagne as well. pindar (the one for the masses) is also there, and has great champagne. on the south fork, the vineyard i like the most in wolffer in sagaponack. be sure to pick up some pies from briemere farms on sound avenue in jamesport.

I would look into staying at the new B&B at Shinn Estate:

Another place, owned by a friend of ours, is the Orient Inn in Orient, which is the prettiest of the North Fork villages. (I am a bit biased, I admit)

The winery I like very much is Paumanok in Aquebogue; known for their whites.

We spent a night at Heron Harbor Suites in Southold (North Fork) and it was lovely. Although it's a motel (not an inn), it's very nice and located next to Port of Egypt Marina. You can walk to The Seafood Barge for dinner which was excellent (of course, they also serve local wines). If you go, ask for a table by the window. I can't recall the winery names, but we visited the North Fork. The only one that I wasn't wild about was Pindar, which seemed to have a "bar room" crowd. The others were wonderful, small and low key.

My favorite lunch place is the Hellenic Diner which is near Orient Point. If you like Greek food, this place can't be beat. They also have outdoor seating with local wines. Sept. is a beautiful time to be there.
Have a great time!
