LODI California! A better alternative for wine lovers...here's a report I finally wrote.

Napa is all people seem to know. If you want to sit in traffic, pay huge tasting fees, share tastings with crowds, compete with tour buses, then go to Napa! Well, there are parts that aren't that bad, but you need to get off the beaten path for sure. We have always preferred Sonoma and other areas north, but even there it's catching up to Napa. We've been to Lodi twice and will probably go back in March for the festival. Here's a little summary about some cool things there. Enjoy!

Hi LLindaC, a long time ago my maternal grandfather had vineyards in Lodi. It has a special place in my heart. I am glad you enjoyed Lodi and that you will be able to return in March. P.S. I am pretty certain that the grapes Budman uses for the wine he makes is from Lodi.

ooooo Budman's wines! I have one up there gathering personality! Had to open one, though...very good stuff! I had a bottle of Foot Stomp Zin from Berghold Winery in Lodi last night. It was awesome.
lvk.....I wouldn't mind being stuck in Lodi as long as the wineries are open!

As long as we are on the subject of alternate wine regions in California, I thought I would mention the Sierra Foothills, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Carmel Valley as additional places to visit. And then of course the Santa Ynez valley which has become quite popular in the last couple years.

For anyone who wants to check out wineries off the beaten path or along their vacation route without taking extra days to go to the "wine country", there are tons of choices.

What a wonderful place - wine everywhere. We are so spoiled

LLindaC: Thanks for the report, we just might go in March too.

J Correa: Well put, we enjoy Livermore and Plymouth area wineries. Further south we plan to explore Paso Robles on 101 half way between SF and LA.
