there is a thing called couchsurfing - sometimes the person is only offering a couch, a pull out couch or room to crash - sometimes they offer guest rooms with shared or private baths -
I think it started mostly with younger people using it - but not the last article in our regional paper interviewed an entire group of seniors who had 'taken over' in using couchsurfing as an inexpensive (free) way to travel and then reciprocate for others !

I think bunny144 may be talking about something a little more formal. Many so-called "B&Bs" are rooms in people's homes. There is one B&B service for Alaska online called www.alaskabandb.com, but I can't personally vouch for this. You're looking for something like a sobe in Croatia (a private room in a home). I hope someone will find the web site you're thinking of if this isn't it.

If you're over 50, you might want to consider the Evergreen Bed and Breakfast Club www.evergreenclub.com A quick check confirmed accommodations in Juneau, Fairbanks, and Anchorage Alaska. The only downside I see is that you also have to agree to open up your home to guests as part of the reciprocal agreement. On the plus side, the annual membership fee is currently 50% off...
