lodging in key west
I have been reading the different threads on this site and I have a few specific questions. My boyfriend and I are planning two nights in key west in early may. We are looking for a b&b or guesthouse fairly close to Duval st. We are hoping to keep the price per night under $135. This being the off-season it doesn't seem impossible. All we want is a clean place with a little bit of charactor. A pool would definately be a plus. I have looked on keywest.com and there are so many that look great that any personal experience or suggestions would be very helpful. We are both in our mid twenties and we are pretty flexible. The responces on this site have been great. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks again all,
CB

Duval Street stretches from the Gulf to the Atlantic, with the more desirable side (in my opinion) being the Gulf. All the sunset activites and most of the tourist attractions and restaurants are clustered around the Gulf end of Duval. So you might keep that in mind when you book a room. If you've already done a back search of this board, try keywestparadise.com and look under accommodations. You should find lots in your price range.

If you can live without having a pool I can highly recommend Jasmine House. They have two three porchside rooms at about $90 and a very nice suite upstairs in the back for about $110-$120. The rooms are charming and decor vey nice. It is very close to a convenient part of Duval (a few hundred yards) but there's no pool. IIRC, they may offer a pass that lets you use the pool at one of the large hotels in town but I'm not certain of that. On a more recent trip I stayed in Eden House and they have a great pool area but are not convenient to Duval. It's a 15 minute walk or a 5-10 minute bike ride. Prices are a bit higher than Jasmine House and Jasimine has a cozier atmosphere because it's so small but I did like Eden House.

I have stayed there 5 times.

Thanks so much for the responses, we are thinking of the Jasmine House, however we have had availability problems (we didn't realize we were going to be there during cinco de mayo...apparently this is a somewhat busy weekend). If there is no availability are there any other inns or guesthouses similar to the Jasmine House? Thanks again keep em comin!

Earlier this year my husband and I stayed at Key West Harbor Inn, www.keywestharborinn.com. It was really convenient, has a pool and a happy hour with free drinks (and breakfast). Location is absolutely great, close to the harbor and Schooner Warf, also close to Duval (at the "happen" end). The Inn is enclosed with a tall fence and great plants, giving you a feeling of privacy. Steve and Alexis the owners are willing to give suggestions once you are there.
One night was a little noisy (the VFW is close by) but with the AC fan on we didn't hear anything. Parking is a little tough on the street, but public parking is close by.
We loved it and would stay there again.
For things to do, definitely Fort Jefferson for beaching it. If you like plants the garden club has a neat tour in an old fort (donations welcome) out by the busier beach (I think it is Smathers Beach--don't go for that beach.)
Our favorite show on Duval is "Pete and Wayne" at Sloppy Joes, if you catch their last show for the day (around 6 or 7P.m.) and the crowd plays along they are hilarious.
Have fun,
Nanci
