LLindaC's "I Went Walkin' in Memphis" Weekend
Hello friends! Well, as travelers you know about those trips when you just know it's going to be bad. Mine started with a car wreck Fri morning. Not my fault, but the 16 yr old neighbor, good friends. Car was drivable, but had to get light fixed, took time got a late start. Hit Nashville at rush hour. Got to Memphis at 11 their time, 2 hours late. Forgot toothpaste, one shoe, deodorant and all papers for trip. The Marriott Memphis was right by convention center. Daughter was in fencing tourney, I figured afterward while she watched friends, I'd take the trolley and sightsee. The trolley was closed, huge fires destroyed 4 landmark buildings. The homeless had to move to our hotel's trees for shelter.I did a fair share of walking in Memphis! Daughter copped the estrogen attitude and didn't want to do Peabody or Graceland. She didn't even want to have dinner with me, so one night it was room service and in-house movie. Big fun. Room service took an hour and 40 minutes. They comped it and gave me breakfast, too. I had to call housekeeping- they were growing dust monsters under the bed and feeding them with lots of food, used condom and several other goodies including a $250 pair of Dolce&Gabbana sunglasses. Didn't report those. Manager looked under there and almost heaved. Highlight of trip was service at St Mary's on Sunday. I was hoping for rock'n roll, the highlight of the trip was church. Daughter lost all but 2 matches, not in great spirits. I did have a fun meal at Westy's though on the way out. Next time....I'm going with my husband....

Next time, yes!! Memphis wasn't the problem, it was totally a string of disasters, lol. Hope bad karma had nothing to do with those fires!! At least the weather was gorgeous. Remind me that traveling with a teen is not ideal under any circumstances....

Your trip report made me laugh. I'm so glad you took it all in stride and still managed to have a positive attitude in the end. Maybe the sunglasses helped make the experience a little bit better?

Now my 12 and 16 yr old are fighting over the sunglasses. 16 yr old thinks she looks like Paris Hilton in them, LOL! MOMMY has never spent more than 15 bucks on any sunglasses, given the way I always lose them....

Oh no, LLindaC, what an experience!
But, you seem to have kept your sense of humour intact so good for you. Doesn't sound quite like your Switzerland trip. ;-)
Anyway, thanks for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly that is the reality of life!

I'm always afraid to look under the bed in a hotel.....you know how If a tree falls in the woods and nobody's there to see it, does it make a sound? I equate that to If you don't look under the bed in a hotel, is there nothing there to see?
Wishful thinking, I'm sure...
Too bad about you hitting town the same time as the fires..... on the bright side, they said on the news last night that the first fire that burned down the methodist church was not arson. The Methodists were relieved nobody was out to get 'em...
