Liveable Major City
Yes. I know big cities are tough places to live. But someday I hope to move to one. Their is something about the concentration of culture, nightlife, sophistication that is somehow beyond compare. My 4 favorite cities are: Toronto, Chicago, Boston and Seattle and though they are all great which one would be the best to live. I am looking for the one that is chock full of fantastic neighborhoods but still has some liveable qualitys. I know this is pretty wide open but what do Fodorites think? Which one combines the most big city fun with a mild climate, mild traffic, good public transit ect.

Do you plan to work? Send your children to school? What can you afford in terms of housing? These are the things that determine viability in any environment. Many large cities offer fantastic neighborhoods, culture, nightlife, etc.
What do you consider fun? mild climate? mild traffic?

Well, it doesn't fit mild climate I would strongly suggest Chicago. How I love those great neighborhoods, the night life, the culture. I could tell you many wonderful things about Boston, but, I say Chicago is the great American City. The cost of lving in San Fran, NYC or Boston also makes it tough for someone just starting out.

The mild climate is the hard issue considering your choices. None of these are what I call wonderful climate (San Diego really comes to mind). But I suppose Seattle would have to win that battle if you can stand the cool drizzle half the days of the year. At least no trudging through snow and slush or scraping frozen windshields as a rule.
But if this were my decision, you've left off New York -- where I'd like to live in a heartbeat -- although climate is again an issue.
But with your choices? It would be Chicago.
