Ivk,

I'll just post on your thread, as we didn't do anything new that hasn't been reported...just went to relax and get out of the rat race. Got caught in the Kapaa traffic going back to Poipu after day to North Shore. DH said forget driving this way again during the rest of week.

Airline: American Air direct from LAX to Lihue. Took our own food on board, and ear phones for the movie. Yes, we got stuck with the $750 price, even though I booked 6 mon. in advance and had been keeping an eye on the fares. I needed the seats together and they were going fast.

The car rental: Used Hertz. DH went immediately to the shuttle across the street while the rest of us, DS, DIL and baby picked up and waited with the luggage. DH was first to the shuttle bus, but had to wait for it to fill up before they left the airport. Once there, he had to wait for them to wash the mini van. Was told they don't wash the cars until the person rents them. Seemed like forever before he came to get us. Actually, my 32 year old son did most of the driving, but we didn't stop to sign him up as a second driver.

Stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu. They sent Champagne up for our Anniversary. DH arranged for flowers for our room. Was sunny all week, and the lagoon was a wonderful place for the 14 mo. old granddaughter. Oddly, it was never crowded there, everyone must have been out site-seeing.

Had dinner at the usual places, Beach House, Brennekes, Joe's on the Green, Keoiki's Paradise, Roy's and Tidepools.
One night we discovered the Hyatt Luau right out our balcony's, so ordered room service for dinner, and watched the show for free.

Enjoyed Leilani Rivera on the Seaview Terrace a couple times. Beautiful voice.

I'm working on getting some photos together and will send a link.

Anyone going over between Dec 29th and Jan 18th is a total fool. That is the WORST time to be there...as the research continues.

Great MBNancy, 2 reports for the price of one! =D> Glad you had fun with your little granddaughter.

Kal,
I'll be thinking of you in paradise from the slopes of Tahoe.

JAKCruiser, Budget didn't have the requirement of the second driver signing, as long as the second driver was a spouse. And it still doesn't explain all the people doing this on the way back.

Princeville & the Hanalei Bay Resort:

Driving into Princeville, you definitely get that Stepfordish-planned-golf-course-community vibe. Just FYI for those of you looking for a funky beach town-- this isn't it-- try Hanalei.

I described the condo at the HBR above. The kitchen was well equipped. The in-room washer/dryer was definitely a huge plus for us. The view from our lanai was better than the view from the Bali Hai Restaurant, IMO.

Kauai Vacation Rentals left us a nice welcoming gift of little soft cooler-type lunch boxes filled with Kauai treats, such as Kauai Coffee, Kauai cookies, 2 or 3 different kinds of mac nuts and bottled water. A very nice touch! Upon turning in our keys at the end of our stay, they gave us a CD of Island music. Also very nice! I would recommend KVR to anyone.

We chose the HBR because they had the larger condos, on-premises restaurants & bar and large pool for the kids. We were not disappointed and would return again. It's not the Ritz or even the Hyatt, but it worked well for us.

There are, however, a few things you should know going in.

The parking lot is pretty far removed from most of the condos. This ensures that no condo has a parking lot view, but it is quite a hike with groceries. One of the (surly) golf cart-driving bellmen can help you if you need it. Also, in the evenings when people from outside the resort come to dinner at Bali Hai, the lot fills up and there are zero parking spaces.

Here's a map of the resort: http://alohacondos.com/hanalei/image...resortmap1.jpg

The pool was nice, never crowded and never felt overrun with children. They have a little shop by the pool where you can purchase sunscreen & sundries and get your pool towels. They make a pretense of taking your name down when you take and return them, but are not very strict about it.

There is no poolside food or beverage service. You can order food to go at the Happy Talk and eat by the pool, but you cannot take beverages from HT to the pool area. You can, however, bring beverages & food from your condo to the pool.

There is an orientation breakfast on both Sat. & Sun. but we didn't go because it smelled of a timeshare pitch

Great photos, MBNancy. I'd be interested to hear your family's take on Inter-Island.

Okay, sorry this is taking so long. Life keeps getting in the way of posting.

ACTIVITIES

Inter-Island Helicopter tour. We did the no-doors, waterfall landing. Since there were 5 of us, we had to split into 2 groups, 20 minutes apart. We did get to spend some time together at the waterfall. I've been struggling about what to say about this, but I'm a bottom-line kind of person, so here it goes. Although I enjoyed the trip, I do not think it was work the $300 plus tax & fees that they charge. I think Inter-Island is cruising on their reputation and the fact that they have the only waterfall landing tour.

Our two pilots were nice enough, but not all that knowledgeable about Kauai (one had only been there 3 months). The 2 passengers in the front with the pilot were very uncomfortable. DH's right shoulder and leg were outside of the helicopter the entire time. The waterfall landing was very nice, but I think I would have preferred more time in the air, exploring the island.

If you are set on the waterfall landing, then go for it. If not, choose a more comfortable 90-minute tour. This is just my opinion.

Horseback Riding: Silver Falls Ranch - two hour ride, no dismount.
This was our second choice because Princeville Ranch was booked. (you need to book early if you are a party of 5!) It was a pleasant ride through some interior property in Kilauea. You know those ocean views get sooo monotonous, so we had to have a change of scenery. The brochures say that it is a working cattle ranch, but we didn't see anything besides chickens. Greg was our guide, and he was very nice.

Snorkeling
Rented our equipment from Pedal N Paddle in Hanalei ($20/week). We saw the most fish at Ke'e, but liked the entire beach experience and reefs at Makua (Tunnels) the best. Ke'e was crowded, and it was low tide, so we didn't get to go out far enough to see the turtles.

Pu'u Poa - the beach near the Princeville hotel. The water was very cloudy the day we went so the snorkeling wasn't good at all.

Anini - beautiful beach, but not so great snorkeling. (Maybe I just didn't know where to go)

Queen's Bath - Okay, I have some tips for those of you thinking of making this little trip. 1) Get a tide chart. (also a good idea for planning your snorkeling activities) If you go at low tide, (as we did), there is not enough water in the pool. If you go at high tide, it's completely under water. 2) Don't go right after a big downpour, as the trail is very, very slick when wet. 3) Don't wear "slippahs". Teva-type sandals or Aqua socks work best for walking down the slippery path and over the lava beds. 4) This might not be the best place to take an elderly family member. The trail is steep.

We didn't see the actual "Queen's Bath", but there was a little inlet where we could swim a bit and we were joined by a couple of turtles, which made it worth all the effort.

Windsurfing - Anini Beach
DH & DD took a lesson from Anini Windsurfing. Not a great snorkeling beach, but a great beach for windsurfing. There are 2 companies that give lessons from Anini Beach. Both seemed very good.

Kayaking, Golf, Tennis, Hiking. Maybe next time?? With 5 people, we couldn't get a consensus on a lot of things. What we definitely want to try next time is the powered hang gliding with "Birds in Paradise". We saw people doing this at the Port Allen airport and it looked like a blast.

Next up.. Restaurants and shopping.

Love reading this. My sister went to Kauai last week and we got to keep her kids for the week. Hmm interesting trade off don't you think. Said it was fantastic. Brought me flowers so every morning it's like I'm in some hotel lobby. She brought leis for the girls so I put my head on the pillow that night with visions and smells of Kauai dancing in my head. I went through withdrawals just imagining I was there!!! It is a hell hole!!

Didn't do the Waterfall landing, just wanted to be in the air for the hour. Loved every minute of it. Thought pilot was great (I wonder how many they have) Had the back seats and were fine.

lvk,
Sounds like you guys had a great time!
Welcome to the klub!

We had a similar snokeling experience at Anini too. I mentioned it to Bob (auntimaria's hubby) at the GTG and he said that we did not go out far enough. We never made it to the Sunday polo match at Anini either. That would've been fun.
We'll try it again next time. (2007)

Aloha,

-Bill

This "June gloom" in August is doing nothing to lighten my mood. Neither is the fact that my clothes dryer is broken and that UPS lost my lobsters!

Yes, Bill, we are in the "klub". I'm also the type that doesn't normally want to return to the same place --too many other places on my "list", and not enough time to see them. We will be returning to Kauai, just not sure when.

Okay then, Restaurants:

We ate most breakfasts and some lunches & dinners on our lanai. We did our grocery shopping at Foodland, which was expensive, but convenient. Tip - get the "Makaii card" to save a little money.

We bought some fresh fruits and vegetables at the Hanalei Farmers' Market on Saturday morning. Loved the white pineapples! However, I must not be a good judge of the ripeness of tropical fruit, because when I went to cut up the fruit the next morning, it was definitely over-ripe. But this is Kauai! When life hands you mushy mangoes and pineapples, pop them into a blender with some apple bananas, POG and ice and you have a delicious breakfast smoothie.

Happy Talk at the HBR- we liked all of the pu-pu's, except the chicken & beef skewers - chicken was dry, beef was tough. The 12" pizza was $24 and I swear, it was "Boboli" bread with some sauce, cheese and pepperoni on top. Oh well, who goes to Kauai for the pizza! We liked the atmosphere, too. We missed the Tuesday Hula show, but enjoyed the live music on other nights.

Polynesia Cafe, Hanalei - loved this place. Their slogan is something like "great food on paper plates". Everything we had here was excellent. They don't have a liquor license, and they weren't accepting credit cards when we were there (just fyi).

Sushi Blues, Hanalei - Also loved the food here. Luckily my kids are big sushi, sashimi & poke fans, so we tried a lot of different things on the menu, and enjoyed everything we tried. The live blues band was a bonus too!

Olympic Cafe - Kapa'a. We stopped here for breakfast on our way to our helicopter flight. Kountry Kitchen was too crowded, and I thought I remembered a post from I'2 about how she enjoyed Olympic Cafe(?). We were not disappointed. Very good breakfasts and reasonable prices. The portuguese sausage was a little rubbery though.

Roy's Poipu - Wonderful as always. We had dinner here after our heli tour, so I'm sure we looked pretty scary. Loved the appetizer "canoe" and, of course, the chocolate souffle.

Hanalei Dolphin, Hanalei -- We really liked this place and returned another night (although service was awful the second time). Since they were out of poke when we went for dinner the first night, we made it a point to get to their fish market the first thing the next morning to get fresh poke - ahi poke, sesame ahi poke and tako (octopus) poke. We also bought some of their ono ceviche (best ceviche I have ever tasted!) and their ono salad (kind of like tuna salad). We feasted on these that night on our lanai. Ono!

Anini Beach Shack - this is actually a truck parked at Anini Beach serving Mexican food. We loved their fish tacos and flautas. We tried to eat at Tropical Taco a few times, but it was a complete zoo, so we gave up.

Hanalei Pizza - okay pizza for a quick stop while shopping.

Bali Hai Restaurant - HBR - mediocre and overpriced breakfast ($4.50 for a side of 4 small pieces of port. sausage, come on!) lousy service. Also, when diners left their tables, pigeons descended on the plates to eat the leftovers. The staff took a very long time to bus the table, so we got to watch the disgusting show. Yuk!

Princeville Hotel Luau - we chose this one because 1) the food was supposed to be the best and 2) When the words "open bar" are used, it is prudent to choose a venue within walking or golf cart distance from your room. We really enjoyed the show and the food was excellent. So were the complimentary mai-tai's and other drinks (forget the names, one was made with Midori). We would highly recommend this luau.

Shave Ice: We tried it from 3 places - the famous Jo-Jo's (best), the truck at Haena Beach Park (#3) and at Polynesia Cafe (#2).

We didn't get around to trying Hamura Saimin or Hanalei Mixed Plate. Next Time!

Gotta go, will get to the shopping next!

Good news -- we have a new pizza parlor in Hanalei -- just opened last week...and if our first pizza is any indicator, we'll be eating there often <burp!>.

It's Tiki Man Pizza, on the back left side of Tahiti Nui (same owner). Open 11am to midnight, seven days a week.

We had the 15" chicken alfredo pizza for $22, and it was worth every penny. Nice thin crunchy crust, lots of topping...yummy! Too many "special" pizzas to list here, in addition to the usual sausage, etc. They've also got salads, hot sandwiches, and pastas.

Hooray! We finally have _good_ pizza!!

I just realized that I never completed the shopping portion of this report. (This is just my excuse for prolonging my Kauai experience for as long as possible)

Shopping:

Kim McDonald Gallery at the Black Pearl Hanalei. Something about her work spoke to me (1st saw it at BaliHai Restaurant). We bought a print while waiting for dinner at the Dolphin. I wanted to mention this place for its excellent service. We had the print shipped home and it arrived badly damaged by the post office. I emailed Jenny at the gallery and she shipped me out a new one (this time UPS) immediately. I shipped the damaged one back with the damaged mailing tube, so she could file a claim with USPO.

Mark Daniels Gallery: MIL bought a rooster print here.

Savage Pearls: MIL bought a nice pendant here.

Pam Dawber Collection in the Princeville shopping Ctr. Bought some cute jewelry here.

Kai Kane Surf shop- good selection of rash guards & t's for the kids.

Of course, bought the $.99 calendars at Hilo Hatties.

Now that my trip report is officially over, I'll just have to console myself with reading about the terrible adventures of those others who won't listen to Kal.

Thanks to everyone (AuntieMaria especially) who gave me all of the awful suggestions.
