The ferry will run, but you might want to check out the sea state prior to taking it. It might be a little uncomfortable. I did once coming up from Va Beach and opted to go around. If the seas are fairly calm 2-3 feet, it's a nice ride.

It depends upon where you are coming from and where you are going. The ferry ride is about 90 minutes, plus the time you have to get there and wait in line to board. You could easily go around and it will take less time, depending upon time of day/traffic.
I like to take the ferry to break up the trip and smell the salt air.

Budman's right. It's long enough to be enjoyable, but not so long as to be a drag.
And for what it's worth, I remember the old Chesapeake Bay ferry at Kent Narrows. It was always a great break in a journey to Delmarva.

Took a trip last November on a very windy day. I'm a seasicker but it wasn't bad - just some rolling. They have great internet schedules but be aware that they run a smaller ferry during the off-season. Lot's of business people were along. The alternative is very long!
