While it's always a good idea to be thankful for those who sacrificed for our liberties, I think more of Memorial Day and Veterans Day in those terms and the 4th of July as a day to celebrate the freedoms and party-hearty!
P.S. - I don't have a long weekend, just Tuesday off.

Gosh, here I am sticking my neck out again, so someone can take offense at what I have to say.
What does this matter if this is a "Noach" posting.?
(Being new to this site, I don't understand the rabid responses to Noach)
It may not be a travel related posting, *but* I don't think it is inane!!!
We are lucky to live in this country , for all it's faults.
And as the Fourth is such a busy traveling weekend, it doesn't seem inappropriate at all, to think about what it means, and to travel safely.
Too many bah-hum bugs out here.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the
Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before
they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in
the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the
Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred
honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were
farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they
signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty
would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships
swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties
to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his
family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his
family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and
poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his
wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives.
His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he
lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.
Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and
sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-
rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education.
They had security, but they valued liberty more.
Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine
providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and
our sacred honor."
They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books
never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We
didn't fight just the British.
We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government!
Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't. So,
take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently
thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.
Remember: freedom is never free!
It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

Wow, Patriot - thank you! You are so right, we really need to pause and ponder the great sacrifices our fore-fathers made for our country.
And BTW to everyone: check your kids history books. You may be surprised what you see. There are some people in this grand land who would like to, and ARE watering-down some of our most important and poignant history.

1. Chuck, why am I 'testy' for merely asking 'psychic' about his apparant double-standard?
2. Audra, you are absolutely right: left-wing America hater's are re-writing history to make European males the root of all evil and all other races to be completely without fault. It is a disgrace. But, as Bob Grant says, it's really over for this country.

Noach, you are so totally right. It is a crying shame that European males are being blamed for so many nasty things that happened long ago. It's a frame-up if I ever saw one. Taking land from Native Americans and committing genocide against them. Slavery, lynchings and segregation. Internment of Japanese Americans. Obviously, European (i.e., Caucasian) males were not responsible for any of these things, and it is high time we re-wrote all of those left-wing history books to reflect that these minority groups did these awful things to themselves, and European males had nothing at all to do with it.

I am brand new to this sight. This morning when I was posting on FaceBook as I normally do, I was longing to post something more then just "Happy Independence Day Every One". So I Googled "Let's Not Forget The Real Meaning of Independence Day", and I found your site. When I read your post on "Let's Not Forget The Real Meaning of Independence Day", I was BLOWN AWAY and also in tears. I can't thank you enough for posting exactly what I needed to hear, and what I wanted to share with my friends. I had no idea what our "Founding Fathers" went through and sacrificed to give us what we have today, that most of us take for granted.
Independence Day will have a new meaning and appreciation for me from this day forward, thanks to you and your post! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this very important and missing piece history with us. God bless you Noach, and God bless America!
