Not really much difference between the two, they are in the same price/quality range. The kicker may be that Paris has more interesting place in walking distance on the strip. If you want shopping, Ceasar's forum shops and the Venetian are both good for non-gambling distractions.
One suggestion for you since you have your daughter, go down to the Coke/M&M museum. The Coke tour has a smalle fee, but it's kinda neat. The big thing is that you get to taste Coke brand products from around the world, plus "fresh" mixed Coke. I swear it was the best Coca-Cola I've ever had! On second thought, you may not want to fill your daughter up with sugar!

I have stayed at both and the Paris has SOOOO much more character and much better food, from an adult viewpoint. A plus for Monte Carlo with a little one would be that you don't have to walk through the casino to get to your room.

I stayed at the Monte Carlo last year with my 7 yr old neice. This is my neice's favorite hotel in Vegas because of the pools. There is a lazy river with water falls, a wave pool, a baby pool, and a regular pool. There were plenty of lounge chairs. You can rent inner tubes or bring your own. If your daughter likes the water she will love this place.
Other pluses that I noted. The casino is not as big as some of the other hotels so you don't have to walk forever to get to your car or out the door. There is a drug store...I think Walgreens....next door that we ran too often.
The negatives: food court is lacking and it doesn't have the grand shops that some of the other hotel/casinos have.
NOTE: I've never stayed at the Paris Hotel, but we had breakfast there one of the morning and it was very good.

I have stayed at both several times and I like them both.
While true that you do not nave to go through the casino at MC to get to the elevators, you do to traverse it get to the strip(in the most efficient manner). At Paris you only pass by a small portion of the casino on your way to the elevators. I think this issue is a wash at best.
Paris rooms are nicer but usually pricier. Paris does have better access to window/actual shopping. MC is close to NYNY which I think is a fun place for all ages to visit, and a must see, at least the exterior. Paris has a wonderful buffet (I have only done breakfast) while MC's is functional. I do love the brew pub at MC and there is no lunch place at Paris to compare. Paris has much nicer upscale restaurants.
So if your only criteria is a place for a 5 year old I would lean toward MC. It is less hectic, usually cheaper and 5 year olds will not appreciate the finer aspects of the Paris.
If this is your first visit to Vegas and you have a spouse along, I would lean toward Paris.

The allure, if you can call it that, of the Monte Carlo is that it is very low-key. It usually doesn't have the same hustle and bustle of most of the other Vegas hotels. The front-desk is near the elevators and you usually don't have the same level of crowd activity. The pool area is just ok. My 70+ year old parents like it because it's a bit more low-key than the other Vegas spots in the same price range.
Paris is probably far more interesting for you daughter in terms of the visual experience, especially if you get a Las Vegas Blvd. view.

We love the Monte Carlo. It is smaller, easy to get to the elevators and rooms, very polite staff, very clean and fresh smelling, not that smoke filled stuffiness of some casinoes. The Market Cafe has very good food at reasonable prices, and the food court is very convenient with kids. I have heard that the brewery has good food also.
My DH and I like Paris, but it is noisy, dark, busy, seems to be a lot of walking to get to the rooms. More of an adult type place.
If you stay at MC you are centrally located and can walk to many of the attractions, like NY, NY, Bellagio, Ceasers (and their new shops that just opened, which are awesome) and others.
