Las Vegas -- which hotel for 50th b'day??

Looking for a hotel for new husband's 50th b'day at end of March. It will be his first trip to LV.
We don't care about gambling that much -- we want to explore the strip and take in a show. We are looking for more "middle of the road" than extravagent or cheap. Our requirements are cleanliness, convenience, comfort, and price.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Gracie in Florida
p.s. he doesn't care about a pool.

You might consider the Barbary Coast. Small, short walks to the rooms, not expensive, no pool, across the street from Ballys and Bellagio. Victorian themed but with a taste of old Las Vegas.

I agree. Paris would be a great choice. Great location - neat atmosphere and good restaurants.

We've stayed there twice. Have breakfast at the Paris Buffet and dinner at Mon Ami Gabi - yummy!

Treasure Island is a good choice. Check out their rates for your time frame. Location is great too.

Thanks for all the replies thus far. I have read some reviews of LV hotels and also some old posts and see where checking in can be a nightmare at some hotels. Our flight would arrive @ 10:40 a.m. on a Friday (March 31st). Do you think checking in will take more than an hour? I read on another post about checking in at the airport. Have you ever tried this?
Also, is the end of March a particularly busy or slow time in LV?

We stayed at the Monte Carlo which we thought an excellent choice. Like you we aren't gamblers and enjoyed visiting all the other places along the strip. The buffett at the Monte Carlo was the best we tried.

I recommend the Mirage, they have a more mature crowd and is one of the few hotels where their guests don't all dress in jeans/t-shirts all of the time. Nice atmosphere, good restaurants, great show on property (Danny Gans) and great center Strip location.

Have just booked trip to LV for gals' 50th b/day getaway in May. Staying at the Flamingo as their room rates are very reasonable, it has one of the best pool areas, it's in a great location on Strip and they have completed a renovation to it over past year. Check out www.cheapovegas.com for excellant reviews of all hotels.

Gracie-just got back from a 1-night stay at the Sahara for $40. It's one of the older properties, but it was perfectly acceptable in terms of comfort and cleanliness. Not a luxury hotel at all, but that's not what you're looking for. It's at the north end of the strip, but the monorail stop right outside. Unlike some of the bigger casinos, it's not a 15-minute trek to get to the monorail, so I'd think that would be a reasonable option for you to get to mid-Strip and explore from there. It's also a bit closer to Fremont Street than most of the Strip, so if you're headed over there by cab it might be more convenient.

They have several check-in kiosks in the lobby. Swipe your credit card, confirm the info on the screen, and you'll have a room key within a minute. Easier and quicker (at least when I was there) than checking in via the front desk.

What is your price range (define middle of the road)? If you're staying during the week, you should be able to get a rm for $100 or less at Paris, Treasure Island, Flamingo, (all good locations). I agree w/ the posters above that Paris of these would be my choice. As for checking in, I wouldn't worry. If you get to your hotel and the rm isn't ready, they'll gladly store your luggage. I've had good luck w/ early check in (before noon). Last but not least, by most city standards there is never a slow time in Vegas Enjoy!

I'd suggest the Paris which is mid-strip. It's beautiful, comfy and good food. I don't recall seeing many, if any, kids there, which WE preferred. They also have a very entertaining show called We Will Rock You, set to the music of Queen. Loved it.

Gracie, I would suggest the Aladdin, Paris is very nice too as someone else suggested in you go from Sun to Thurs. you can get rooms that normally go for $240 for $140 I would suggest you check with www.cheaptickets.com or www.hoteldiscount.com last time I went to Vegas (and it was during the weekend) I got the Aladdin for $129 + taxes. Also don't know if you've ever used priceline to me they are great good luck.

Aladdin is finally undergoing renovations to become Planet Hollywood. Construction would make it a place I would personally choose not to stay, depsite the good location.

We love Monte Carlo for many reasons that I will give you here. First, it is kind of smaller or at least it feels that way, you don't have to walk through miles of casino, it is very fairly priced, it is located in the middle of the strip, walking distance to most everything. It is next to Bellegio and NYNY. One time we got a room that overlooked the fountains, so that when I went to sleep at night I could see the fountains. It is clean and pleasant.

They have wonderful restuarants, especially the Italian one. I have also heard that the brewery inside has good food. They also have a food court with about 5 or so fast food places, which can be great in the morning going out the door, or coming home late at night when you might need a soft pretzel or some french fries to soak up the hooch.

The staff is friendly. AND on top of all of this, they have a great pool with a lazy river. That is all I have to say, and NO, I don't work for the company...LOL.

Gracie - I just returned from a long weekend in LV to celebrate a 50th b-day in November. We stayed at the MGM - nice rooms, on the monorail system, etc. It was not my first trip but was a first for my neighbor. We went to KA (highly recommend), Mamma Mia (great for our age group), out to Red Rock canyon and did a lot of walking. I posted a trip report if you're curious. have fun!

Our airline ticket alone will cast around $540.00 per person. We will have two nights and three full days if we arrive Friday am and return late Sunday. We would like to spend no more than $200.00 per night for the room. It looks like we can come out better booking the hotel and flight together on travelocity or expedia. (I have only booked airfare through those sites, never air and hotel together.) The specials that appeal to us on Expedia and Travelocity are for Bellagio, Paris, MGM, Monte Carlo, Flamingo, Barbary Coast, and Ballys.
In choosing a hotel, we want to avoid long check-in lines, long hikes from our room to the outside, lots of kids, snootiness, and extreme rowdiness.

If you want to avoid long hikes to your skip the MGM Grand, that place is immense. From a strictly personal standpoint I'd also skip Flamingo, Bally's, Barbary Coast - none of them do much for me (personal opinion only).

The Monte Carlo is nice enough and not overly huge. Bellagio is HUGE - you can walk for miles in there. Paris is a pretty good bet, but I'd still check out rates at Mirage and Treasure Island. The Lobby at T.I. is actually very close to the elevators so you do not have to hike a mile. Mirage is a long walk through casino to the elevators but I am fond of that hotel just the same.

Check in lines can vary by time of the day/day of week and number of people working. We go to Vegas often and normally checkin does not take more then 15 min. tops (we usually stay at the Mirage or T.I.).

As for avoiding kids - good luck. Everyone and their dog brings their kids to 'Vegas anymore. Aside from saying I do not think it is a place for children of any age I'll just hope you get a few days of relatively kid-free action, however do not be surprised by familes dragging tired children down the strip at midnight.

I've never seen any extreme rowdiness anyplace so not sure what you are referring to (bar scene ?? ) As for snootiness, well it depends on what you call snooty I guess. We've been in every hotel in Vegas over the years and eaten in most of them as well and never encountered any problems.

gracie - to avoid long check in lines, see on the hotel website if they have a check-in at the airport (I know MGM does among others). also - there are sometimes doors that lead to 'wings' of rooms from the street and avoid the main casino and longer walks.
