Las Vegas - What Not to Miss??
My boyfriend and I are headed to Las Vegas June 7th - 11th. We've got tickets to Lord of the Dance and are planning a day trip to the Grand Canyon. Other than that we're free. What should we not miss out on?
Thanks!
PS - We're staying at the Aladdin so any feedback on this hotel would be greatly appreciated.

Lake Mead & Hoover Dam are a nice way to spend 1/2 day. Mt. Charleston is a beautiful place for lunch, and it's a lot cooler up there. I don't know if this is your first trip, but you should visit the different theme hotels (don't miss the Hard Rock, it's not on the strip.) There's a TKTS booth on the strip now, inside of the M&M store, for same day 1/2 price tickets to various shows.
Have a great time!

If you go to the Grand canyon, try and spend a night there - you will enjoy it much more. 8 hours of driving in one day is too much. Alternately, consider Zion which is also very beautiful and is 3 hours each way. After a few days in Vegas, you may crave some quiet and greenspace!
As for places in Vegas, the dolphin and tiger exibit at the Mirage is interesting, as is the Bellagio fountain show. Just going from casino to casino checking out the live bands is fun. We found 'New York New York' had the most interesting mix of music - cool jazz/blues in one lounge, rowdy sing along pianos in another, and a punk dance club. We found two nights in Vegas more than enough, but some people can spend a week there.

I think you could skip all of Las Vegas and not miss a lot. However, if you are set on going Las Vegas is best seen at night. Daytime is bland by comparison.
As mentioned above, the Mirage has sights to see. Our daughter enjoyed Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and the Dolphin Show there.
The "O" Show is world famous. The Las Vegas Hilton has a Star Trek virtual reality attraction. We thought the Treasure Island pirate show was a little hokey, but the water show at the Bellagio might entertain you. We thought the shops at the Venetian interesting only because so much money went into the canal and the walkway, the artificial sky, etc. Oh, the things that mankind creates!

Vegas is all what you make of it. Obviously TourGuide didn't care for it, but my husband and I just adore the place.
Pity that you already bought the Lord of the Dance tickets because they are now available at the 1/2 Price Tickets booth!
Aladdin is a great location. If you do't know much about casino gaming, I highly recommend their lessons. I've played blackjack for quite a while and I still learned some tips. The casinos are a lot less crowded and the tables have lower minimums during the week, so if you are looking to learn to play, that is the best time.

I'm going there too and may fly to the Grand Canyon. There are a few tour companies that fly into Grand Canyon and you can do it in a couple of hours while enjoying a nice airtour. www.scenicairlines.com is on I'm looking at.

RE: Danny Gans-- does the world NEED another impressionist doing George Burns and Jimmy Stewart impressions...?! My personal favorite for impressions is Jim Carrey's quick take on "On Golden Pond" (because it was quick). Danny Gans is fine at what he does, but it's a slightly tired form of entertainment.
Save those pennies for one of the Cirque du Soleil shows. I would have passed on "Lord of the Dance", but I'm not a fan of Irish step-dancing (for me, it's a sequin-encrusted step away from Appalachian clog-dancing, you know?)-- others love it, so there you go.

Hey rjw_lgb_ca, i usually LOVE your advice; its the best. However, i disagree with your take on Danny Gans...
I first saw him several years ago at a national meeting with my company, (he was our 'entertainment') and then in vegas shortly after. While the genre MAY be overdone, i truly think hes the best. His voice rocks, imho.
