Pam,

I'm with Tom - both places are great fun but don't let us decide! This one really depends on what you want out of the trip. Let us know!

Thanks for your response. Sorry for being evasive. I have never been either place. My first choice would be Las Vegas, but traveling from cold/snow into cold (Possibly Las Vegas) is a worry. I would like to travel to Zion, etc. Whereas, if I choose SanDiego - weather maybe favorable to outdoor sightseeing!

I live in San Diego and visit Las Vegas very frequently. As previously stated, it really depends what you wish to do. The weather will probably be warmer in San Diego but January is a very iffy time of the year, It can be sunny and very warm to chilly and rainy. I have seen 95 at my house in the San Diego area in January but also rain. Typically there is a warm stretch in January but there are no guarantees.

Las Vegas is usually very chilly in January.

If both places had bad weather at the same time then I would choose Las vegas simply because there is a lot more to do without going outside.

If you intend to do some gaming then Las Vegas may be your choice though there are 3 casinos in the San Diego area. In fact one of them is my favorite casino over any in Nevada or elsewhere.

If you have not visited Las Vegas then it is a pretty spectacular sight with all of the new mega resorts.

Pam,

Just so you know, our next Hosted Forum, which starts Monday, October 16, is on the subject of Las Vegas. Mel Parkinson, a Las Vegas based freelance writer, will be taking questions starting at noon. Feel free to ask her anything you'd like.
Just choose "Hosted Forum" from the upper left hand corner of the fodors.com home page.
Enjoy!

Las Vegas is chilly in January but moderate compared to east coast or cold parts of the country, and San Diego isn't really that much warmer and not at all tropical. I would probably go to LV if you can have fun at casinos/gambling for a couple days as I think you can get good deals in Vegas in January--I was looking into it last year so I remember that. Early December is their real low season, but I think Jan is still good value. I'm no big San Diego fan, I think it is more attractive to people with kids who want to go to the zoo, sea worled, etc, as the main interests only last a couple days (museums in Balboa park, the quasi-hokey but okay old town area); I think San Diego is over-hyped for some things which are rather disappointing when you really see them (ie, the "gaslamp" quarter, which is just a couple of rather unremarkable blocks). If you really like animals, there are that animal park thing and the zoo in San Diego. I think Las Vegas is in the mid-50s in the daytime in January, which isn't that bad, and mid-30s at night, but San Diego's historical weather avgs for Jan,if you look at them, are only about 10 degrees higher than that (mid60s daytime, mid40s night).

This needs to be elevated. By the way 10 degrees is a considerable difference.

Hi Pam, will you be traveling alone? Although one should always be on their toes when traveling alone, as a single gal, Vegas could be a bit more dicey (no pun intended). I've lived in San Diego for 17 years and have been to Vegas many times. I'd vote for San Diego (substance over style). Why not make just an over-night of Vegas? P.S. There's not much "surrounding area" of Vegas. It's in the middle of the desert! (Not unless you count the sea of track homes springing up).

Those are tract homes that are springing up.
