Las Vegas, North Rim and Zion
We are heading west beginning of October. We want to visit North Rim and Zion. What are the best options for leaving out of Vegas. We would like one night in each location and wonder where the best place to stay would be in each location.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Vegas to Zion is about 2.5 to 3 hrs. You go North on I-15 then cut over. google maps will give you directions - there is really only one way to get there.
Stay in the town of Springdale, UT, which is immediately outside the park. Many good options there. A new LQ, Cable mtn lodge, Hampton Inn, Desert Pearl, and numerous other options spanning a range of prices.
Zion to GC is another 2.5 to 3 hrs. At GC, you should stay at the lodge right on the rim. I do not know what time if year they close for the winter - I don't think it is early October, but you'd best check. If they are full, hopefully others will chime in with ideas outside the park.
GC back to Vegas is 4.5 to 5 hr drive.

If you can't get lodging at the north rim, there are several places to stay in Kanab UT, about 1 and a half to 2 hours from the rim. Jacob's Lake and Fredonia are closer, but I don't know if there is lodging there.
We've stayed in the park at Zion, not fancy but nice to be there.

Of interest to you I suspect:
"The last meal served at Grand Canyon Lodge will be breakfast, which ends at 10 a.m. on October 16. The final day for mule rides on the North Rim will be October 15. Self service gas and diesel fuel will continue to be available in the park through November 25 or until Highway 67 closes."

If not, there are good options in Kanab, but it is also very popular in October. Many Kanab lodgings require a nonrefundable deposit since so many people keep trying for lodging inside the park.
We though sunrise was a much nicer experience than sunset at the Lodge. Instead of hanging around the lodge for sunset, I would recommend driving out to one of the viewpoints such as Cape Royal instead. The patio at sunset was wall to wall people jostling for a view, and the sun sets over a forested ridge rather than the canyon itself. There are very few tables inside the restaurant that have window seating, and non for two people.
