Las Vegas, NM?
Hi again!
I was reading about Las Vegas, NM and it seems like a very interesting town with a lot of history. I guess it's about an hour and a half from Santa Fe - what kind of drive is it? Is it fairly easy and can a trip to Las Vegas be combined with anything else? I adore Theodore Roosevelt and the fact that the Rough Rider museum is there is something surprising to me AND a real positive. Has anyone visited this museum? Is it well done? Is Las Vegas worth taking the time to see? Are there any good places to eat there? I'm going to have to cut out a lot of things from my potential itinerary, but it's hard - there are so many things to do, lol. I just want to be careful that I'm not doing too much driving......
Thanks again - you've been really helpful to me!
***Sorry, this is a repost, but my first attempt did not end up in the NM board***

Interstate all the way, piece of cake.
Is Las Vegas worth taking the time to see?
I spent a day and night there once, visiting and photographing at the wildlife refuge out of town a short distance.
It's a very small town, not a lot to do, not exactly a 'destination resort'. Maybe worth a half-day trip from Santa Fe or worth stopping on the way from SF to Colorado, but if you're already in Santa Fe it's hard to justify going to Las Vegas until you've seen all the many cool places within driving distance of Santa Fe.

Boy, I was surprised to see a post about Las Vegas, NM show up on the board! My husband grew up there and I met him when I ended up there for college.
It is a very small town with many interesting houses and buildings - see http://www.lasvegasnewmexico.com/ as there are photo tours. The Rough Riders museum is small, but well done. As for places to eat, I don't mean to be partial, but my brother-in-law's family owns Johnny's Kitchen, right down the street from the Rough Riders museum.
I would agree with Bill that it's probably not worth the trip from Santa Fe, but it's an interesting place to stop if you're going that way. If you do decide to go, check the hours on the museum as I seem to remember them keeping odd hours.
If you don't get a lot of responses and decide to add Las Vegas in, post back your questions and I can get some current info from my family there if you need it!

Bill, thanks! There is just an incredible amount of things to do in and around Santa Fe. I have a ton of time on my hands and anything that appeals to me is going on my list, but I know I'm going to have to weed some things out. It's tough, though, to do. Besides doing the usual, I'd like to do some unique things, things that maybe most tourists wouldn't do. That's part of why Las Vegas appeals to me, but.......I admit that it's easy to put down on paper and not so easy to do in the sense that I don't want to spend so much time in the car.
JBee, I think I would like Las Vegas a lot if I made my way out there, small town or not. I think part of the appeal is that (although I grew up here and I love it) Long Island, NY is so suburban and strip-mallish. I really look forward to getting out of this shell and exploring more of this country. Thanks for your kind offer, also - on another board, 99% of the posts on Las Vegas were for the OTHER one, even on the New Mexico board. lol.
I'm going to make a separate post about my itinerary questions.
Thanks again!!
