I've stayed at the Orleans (not alone), and would say it's safe for solo travelers. Although me personally, I would prefer staying on the strip if I was traveling alone.

Thanks Joesorce and Trippinkpj. The hotels that I've stayed at in downtown don't have security guards at the elevators. But since I have to go on this trip alone, it's good to know that these hotels have guards. Guess the best advice is to be aware of your surroundings. Thanks alot, you've been most helpful.
