Las Vegas and kids

Thought I would be brave and jump into the fray about Las Vegas and kids. We just returned from a long weekend trip there with our two children, pre-teen and teen. Our purpose was to meet friends there. Did they have a good time? Yes. Was there a lot for them to do? Yes. Was there a lot of other kids there? Yes!!! Tons! Did they get approached by unseemly characters? No. Would I take them again? NO!!
They are many great places to vacation in the US that kids love and are reasonably priced. Take them to Boston, Chicago, DC, Boulder, St. Petersburg, the beach, science museums, the Grand Canyon, Sea World, the park, etc. Why take them to a city that is centered around gambling?

Well, why DID you take them to Las Vegas then?

Only the most selfish parents would drag their kids to Las Vegas. Anybody who says there are a lot of things for kids to do there is rationaizing their poor decision. I think you'll find many, many regretful parents who realize they made a terrible mistake in doing this.

And, as the above writer says, there are plenty of good destinations that don't require you to leave your kids behind while you explore your destination.

Well, I'll jump in too. Manager, many families choose Vegas as a destination because there are great deals for getting there and hotels. For some families vacationing in a warm desert climate with swimming pools are all the ingredients they need for a good family vacation. Surprisingly, some people go to Vegas and don't gamble!

Is it the ideal family vacation spot? Probably not. Can you make it work if it's all you can afford or if you are meeting other family there or friends or business takes you there? Sure.

Why did we take them there?
Our friends, who live over 1500 miles away chose Las Vegas as a hopping off place for their vacation. Because Vegas is a 6 hour drive from home we didn't want to miss the opportunity to see them. (They have kids too) I certaintly don't consider myself selfish since the vacation was for the kids as much as the adults to get to see each other. We didn't go to the casinos, and face it, there are many, many things for kids to do there. If you don't see that, you are the one in denial. Vegas can work for kids, but I personally wouldn't do it again. They are many other places I would rather go.

They don't call Vegas "Sin City" for nothing. The city thrives on ADULT entertainment....gambling, drinking & smoking, nude shows and prostitution. (Even though prostitution is not legal in Clark county, it's obviously a booming business based on the mountain of pamphlets that litter the streets.) Kids can have fun almost anywhere if the circumstances and the company they keep is conducive for fun. That still doesn't make Las Vegas an appropriate city for children.

Cathy, don't feel like you have to justify your actions to some morons on this board. You did what you did for your own reasons and it's frankly none of their business.

The negative posts about people and their kids, and the overly sensitive posts defending women are all the work of Nina, the troll who lurks this board. Pay her no mind and don't feel like you have to defend yourself.

Hi Nina, sweetie. Watch your back.
