Las Vegas Advice

We are going to Vegas at the end of March. We want any advice you have. Where is the best food? Best prices? We wanted to see O, but it is sold out of decent seats, is Mystere a better show? We are staying at the Gold Coast, should we rent a car. I am a teacher and my husband is a student, so we need to save $ where we can. THis will be our honeymoon that we never got last year, so we want it to be special as possible.

If you're looking for a good buffet, try the Rio. Lots of food stations and good desserts. You'll definitely be stuffed when you leave. And while you're at the Rio, make sure to go over and watch their free Mardi Gras show - very entertaining considering the price!

O is far more amazing than Mystere, but if you can't make it into O, then I think you'd find Mystere to still be quite good.

There's really no need to rent a car in Las Vegas. There are so many taxis and the free trams between many of the hotels.

Well, opinions are like armpits, I suppose, everyone has them....and mine are different from "xxx's" (my opinions and my armpits).
I liked Mystere better than "O". Not that "O" isn't spectacular...it surely is. But I was simply more entertained (though less awed) by Mystere.
As for buffets, the Rio's 'ain't what it used to be'. Spend a couple extra bucks and go to Bellagio's brunch or buffet...the best in town without question.
But I do agree that Rio's Mardi Gras show (which is free) is fun and worth seeing. Rio has a very pleasant casino, though it's a bit of a hassle to get there since it's off the strip a bit. The Mardi Gras show is in the 'back', by the way, in the added on wing of the property.
You don't need a car in LV, and parking them is a hassle (long walks to/from the lots).
Have you found a hotel yet?
If you search the archives here you'll find oodles of info about LV...try putting in "Las Vegas" and words like "best" or "favorite" and you'll get tons of opinions.
Good luck!!

The best advice was to search the archives. Experienced users of this forum soon figure out the wealth of information, much of it very recent, that is available. In the last month I have seen a ton of postings on Las Vegas, from lodging, to retaurants, shows, sidetrips, etc. Have fun.

Use the *text search* function, type in Las Vegas, highly Nevada.
There is lots of info in previous posts and there's one Post which supplies a collection of excellent websites devoted to Las Vegas with advice from low budget lodging, restaurants (that 99 cent shrimp cocktail) to which has the best day spa and everything in between.
Time for the teacher to do some homework.

Hi Lisa,
I have been to LV 3 times. Not an expert, but have some thoughts. The breakfast at the Paris is terrific. The setting is quaint & serene, food is wonderful. Strolling their mall is (and I know I will get heat for this), kind of romantic. The 'streets' are cobblestoned & they have street performers. I loved it. The fountains at Bellagio are romantic at any time of the day. Mystere is wonderful. You could also get onto the 'standby' line for "O". Never hurts. The gondola ride in the Venetian is a rip off, but sitting in the square, eating pasta, and listening to the strolling musicians in costume is wonderful. I think the show CHICAGO is coming back to Vegas in March. You might want to look into that as well. Terrific show & Vegas always draws an excellent cast. Have a wonderful time.

Since you are NOT staying on the strip, I would suggest renting a car. While you can take txis everywhere, they are expensive, averaging $6 -$9 /ride. The casinos are far apart, so walking between them is not practical, since you want to save your strength walking around each casino. Evry trip report you read from 1st time vistors mention how tired and sore their feet were at the end of each day, and everyone also says they under estimate how far each casino is from each other.

Car rentals are not expensive, and all casinos have free parking. Yes, the parking lots are generally a far walk from the casinos themselves, but if that is an issue, you can use valet parking - it is FREE at ALL hotels in Las Vegas, even if you are not staying at that casino. you just need to tip $1-$2 to the guy who gets your car.

Definitely try the standby lines for O- you'll have to get there early but the seats are generally great. (last time I stood in line for about an hour and got seats about 8 rows from the front and smack in the centre). Lance Burton is also a great show (magic) and cheaper than most (<$50). Have fun!

The lunch buffet at the Rio is amazing! You won't need to eat for the rest of the day. We saw Mystere. it is an amazing production and well worth whatever price you pay for the tickets. I, too, am a teacher, so I know how tight your budget is. We used taxi services when we were in Las Vegas, because we didn't want to bother with the traffic and parking. We spent less than we would have spent renting a car and paying for parking.

If you are trying to save money, Paris is not a place that you should go to for a buffet. We found the lunch buffet at both Caesars and Manadalay Bay to be tops among the more affordable ones...go before 3 and then you just need a light dinner at the end of a day. Both of these buffets were below $10.00...lots of choice and pretty good quality.

I have seen both "O" and Mystere, and preferred Mystere. Mystere was jaw-droppingly spectacular and while "O" was incredible, it just didn't have that "wow" factor that Mystere did. Also, if price is a concern, the tickets for "O" are almost $100 each now, and Mystere is more in the $80/ticket range, and well worth every penny. I have eaten at Rio's buffet for dinner and would not recommend it, unless you're more interested in quantity than quality. Tons of food stations, like a massive food court, but all the food was just so-so - nothing special. Here's a great deal we took advantage of when we were in Vegas in December - go to Mr. Lucky's (coffee shop) at the Hard Rock Hotel. They are open 24/7, and ask for the $5.95 steak and shrimp special. It is not on the menu, but they will know what you are talking about. You will get an enormous salad, then a wonderful huge strip steak topped with 3 large grilled shrimp, and either a mountain of great garlic mashed potatoes or a baked potato. It is the best deal around, and we could not eat it all! Well worth the trip. Don't miss the great free stuff: the dancing fountains at Bellagio, the erupting volcano at Mirage, the shows inside the Forum Shops at Caesars, the Fremont Street experience, and the pirate battle at Treasure Island. For great advice from people obsessed with Las Vegas, go to the discussion board at www.lvol.com. Post your questions there, and you will get a ton of great information from some very helpful people. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your trip!
