I went to Lanai on a daytrip in October. A local told us that September-November is one of their low seasons -- they have more visitors during the summertime and then again in December-January. The weather was great when we were there but the snorkeling (which was the reason we went there for the day) was disappointing for some reason. FYI, the island itself is tiny, and not that pretty or picturesque (at least compared to Maui or Kauai), but it has two lovely hotels and the people we met there were wonderful.

Have stayed at Manele Bay three times, each time in early December. The weather was reliably sunny and rain-free during my visits. Manele Bay and the Lodge at Koele were not crowded in early December, but do fill-up to capacity as Christmas approaches. The island of Lanai itself is small and doesn't suffer from tourist crowds, in part because really the only tourists on the island are those staying at the 3 hotels and the occasional golfer making a daytrip to Lanai. The previous poster was correct about Lanai not being overly picturesque nor offering "sights", but the real allure of the island consists of its incredible resorts, laid-back atmosphere, very good snorkeling and beach at Hulopoe Bay, great golfing, horseback riding and perhaps the best dining in Hawaii (though expensive). It is the upscale "resort experience" and not sightseeing that is the draw to Lanai.

We just returned from Lanai and happened to visit in November. It was beautiful. We spent 4 days at the Manele Bay. What a relaxing place. At the Manele Bay the weather was great, perfect for the beach. Up at the lodge it was chilly but I guess that is what you'd expect from the mountains. If you stay at the Bay you may get a chance to swim with the Dolphins. When we were there every morning they came into shore. As for the crowds, the hotel was not crowded. We were able to go to dinner without reservations(although we did not find the food that great) and do many of the hotel activites last minute. Lanai is a great choice. If you have some extra time check some of the other islands.
